Yesterday was driving about no problem, went to start car this morning and nothing. The starter motor doesn't turn, ignition lights come on and when try to start I hear a faint click behind the dash but nothing else. I have taken ignition fuses out and checked visually, they look ok. Trying to work out if it is faulty immobiliser or something else. Please help.

Thanks.

bettery could be totally shot, but in the past on other cars, just a click tends to mean that the starter motor is dead, if you can get to it, swat it with a hammer a few times and try again. Shock tactics i know, but sometimes they have a 'dead spot' and twatting it can free it up a bit. Check the batt voltage first , then id look at the starter!

Might sound really stoopid but if I have not immobilised my car (the alarm!) I only get a click when I try and start it, the whole thing seems dead.....no starter motor turn, nothing!

What alarm do you have??

Thanks guys. Pete, can the PTU fail that sudden, have not had problems with it cutting out when hot. Scoops, the battery seems fine, the head light are bright and the alarm sound is very loud, I will try giving the starter a bash tomorrow.

Cheers.

Yeah, that happens to my immobiliser. When I put the immobiliser key in or use the zapper, the LED stops flashing giving me 20 seconds to start car. It's a "Metta Aquilla" alarm & immobiliser, installed in 1997.

You don;t have an auto by any chace do you ?

If so, can you make sure it's in park :D

I'd be asking questions of the alarm immobiliser first TBH......Just to make sure it's not died on you, it might be permanently immobilised even when you have 'unarmed' it....

I've seen this happen on a few cars now.......plus your alarm is getting old!!

LOL, it's a manwel :)

If you have a multi-meter, get someone to hold the key fully clockwise(starter on) and check for 12v on the single spade connector which is right next to the starter. If there's 12v there than it's the starter motor itself (or the big thick 12V wire to the starter is iffy - not likely tbh). If there's volts there but less than 12 - say 9 then that's usually a corroded connection somewhere. If it's 0v then you may well be looking at an immobiliser fault. A good way of testing the starter is to leave the ignition on and run a wire from the + terminal of the battery to the starter end of this connector but MAKE SURE IT'S NOT IN GEAR! - my Dad ran over his foot once doing this - lol. When you check the voltages, it's best to jam a wire going to the red meter lead in between the two connector ends(connectors pushed into each other as normal) so you can measure the supply under load. Obviously the black meter lead goes to the chassis for ground.

Hope you sort it mate.

Could be a bad earth on the battery, this happened to mine, lights come on but when you go and start the engine it wont start

The PTU failing will cause this, is there anyone near you who could try there's on yours?

Pete

the PTU wont stop the starter turning :slap:

Just tried to start the car this morning and it fired up first time, wierd. Maybe it is the immobiliser playin up, but then again it could be loose wire or corrosion? I really do,'t know what to do now. Thanks for your help guys, and thanks Davemac I will try your suggestion if it fails again.

cheers.

Brings back memories with my jag, but it was an auto. Had some problems with the jag and got this mobile fitter round to have a look. His tranny was parked in front of the jag. He asked me to start it, put it in drive and keep it on the handbreak. The idiot reved it from under the bonnet, jag lurched forward straight over his foot and smashed into back of his transit

This happened to me last weekend, hadnt run it for a week though, but came to it, turned off the immobiliser, put the key in, turned it and no ignition. Dash lights worked and so did everything else. Took the key out, turned the immobiliser back on, then off again, turned it and it worked fine , been ok since!! And no it wasnt in DRIVE this time  lol

Got exactly the same problem on mine, but I'm sure it's an immobiliser problem as it won't open the doors with the keyfob and the little flashing red l.e.d on the steering column has ceased to flash! Tried every fuse I can find, including removing the kick panelling and finding a few more under there. It's a Cobra C422. There's a bloke coming out to look at it now. :-( Do immobilisers just pack up after a while then?
