Hi guys,

I thought my Z was running a little sluggishly on the wkend so i reset the ecu. I took it 4 a spin later and it seemed a lot more responsive, cool :D however, after a running it 4 a while, say 10 miles 4 arguments sake, it seemed to go back to its more sluggish mode! i've also noticed that it doesnt hit consistant boost levels. about half the time it goes up between the last and second last line, but sometimes it only goes up to the second last line. the car's standard bar a custom exhaust (cat back). The ecu is also error free.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Cheers

Theres a few easy things you can do to keep performance tip-top, like cleaning throttle bodies, temperature sensor connector, PTU and CAS connectors up. Any of these getting dirty over time will make the car feel sluggish and/or hesitate on acceleration

Look at http://www.300zx.org.uk under the hesititation bit for more too.

Sorry if this is telling you to suck eggs, but it was a really hot weekend !

Were you sat in traffic when you found the boost to be low ? If you're stuck in a jam on a hot day then accelerate hard when a gap clears you'll often find you hardly get any boost at all. 300's develop a LOT of heat under that bonnet and turbos aint keen on heat !

Possibly detonation causing safety boost? Sory if too obvious. Switching off and back on again to reset it? But if the det comes back your back into safety again.

Have you tried ultimax or other higher octane fuel?

thanks 4 the quick replies. i'm running optimax yeah. interestingly tho, when i 1st checked the ecu, i had err 34 come up. it hasnt been back since tho. does saftey boost show up as an error on the ecu if it's activated?

cheers

hot air = less air = less boost.

Have to say mine was really dragging it's heels in the heat on a long haul yesterday, quite depressing. I guess a bigger intercooler would help (?)

And waterspray, if you want to go the whole hog !

I guess the spray is about the only thing to up the performance in heavy traffic - even large intercoolers need airflow to work at their best !

Waterspray - Ford has some kind of system that uses the aircon to chill a small water tank. This can then be dumped on the intercoolers for instant one time use NOS effect until a refill can be done and chilled again. Seems a bit overkill for one time use lugging a water tank about with you.

If you are getting err 34 is that not simply a bad connection to the det sensor?

He could try cleaning the connections on the det sensor

Ive got the same probs when I stripped me engine down found the det sensor had melted  replaced it with a new 1 but still only runs for around 20mins flat out before coming on again!

prob done the harness too then (did you torque the sensor to the correct setting??)

did not have a setting at the time just fooking tight, the wire melted too, tryed to get hold of another but nissan said it was not sold seperatly! so had to salvage the old one with a new terminal!

The det sensor has two electric spades but mine is only connected to one is this right?

erm, no - there would be 2 wires coming off it!!

also, the torque setting is critical on a det sensor!

oh dear surely it would be running in safety boost constant then???

hmm, ok it seems theres only one of the 2 wires actually connected to the det sensor. the other one is shielding just down to the sub harness

check here for info on testing & bypassing (not recommended permenantly!): http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/PICS/detonationSensor/detonationSensor.html

thanks I'll see what comes up
