Audio question

Just built my new bass bin today using chipboard and bits from my old bass bin. All nice and covered- looks the part, just a little smaller to fit the zed boot.

Problem is, it dont sound that great. The old bass bin was the type where the speakers were sealed inside with a little perspex window and 4 ports for the bass to travel out.

Building the new one, I have the speakers laid on the surface pointing straight out and still with the ports. But dont seem to get the rich low bass I used to have.

Do you think I'd be better flipping the speakers so they point into the box?

I'm sure I have seen this setup somewhere before.

That's your problem bud, use MDF and a very good sealant.

Yea, me scrimped there. But strangely the old one was chipboard and that sounded great, and me wacked loadsa sealant on the new one in the joins.

I think I'll have a go next weekend switching the speaker inwards to see if any better, otherwise I'll scrap it and see if I can reduce the height of the old box to make it fit.

subs are designed to work in a specific dimension enclosure, so basically if u alter the volume of air its designed for the performance will suffer.

I'd say it was the chipboard too, i'd use mdf or plywood! try blocking the ports or just one.

Im not 100% but I think there is speakers specially designed to work that way I think its the solar baric range

I was gong to suggest trying a seal unit, i.e. blocking the ports butJD's beat me to it !

You'll probably find the speakers are quite poor quality and facing them into the box will help a little, reflected bass gives a much more rounded sound and will help a hell of a lot with cheep speakers. Thats most likey why the sound was nicer in the box they were in.

Also try reducing or eliminating the ports as said before.

Thanks for all the advice guys- just goes to show, you cant just slap that sort of thing together.

3 hours of sweat and 30 quid lighter :( hopefully trying some of the things you suggested will give me a better sound, otherwise I'll turn it into a 2 seater and put the old one in. Sorry kids- :slap: you cant go in daddys zed anymore

buy a 10inch JL Audio W7 with a JL 500/1 amp like I have. I have more bass with the one sub than i did with 3 10inch JL Audio Wo's!!!!!!!!!!
