My Zed is off the road cos the exhaust needed to come off again!!! (Sore subject!)

I was wondering if I could drive my brothers car on my insurance as the policy states that I may drive another car with the owners permission. The only problem is that he hasn't got it insured, but does this matter as on my policy it doesn't state that the other driver has to have the car insured?

Cheers,

Shaun

AFAIK the other car must have insurance for your cover to be valid... although I did get away with driving an uninsured car on my policy as I had all my documents so I didn't get a producer!!

The best thing to do is add the car temporarily to your insurance (can only do this if it is uninsured) - should cost nothing compared to gettin done for driving without insurance!!

watch out for the import insurance con....more than 2 companies i got quotes from didnt put down the car was imported...this is after telling them when phoning...i spoke with somebody in the trade who stated there are a lot of co's just ignoring these details because they would lose the business (ie profit) if they couldnt quote you for an import...so they just ignore it and quote away safe in the knowledge if you dont pick up on it they get away with it...oh and if you crash they wont pay out...can you imagine the hassle of trying to get the records of the phone convesation to prove your case....and they say there is a lot of fraudulent claims...more like fraudulent employees

regards

ive just had the above problem - axa didnt put down that it was an import. They tried to get out of paying for it but then realised that they didnt make a N/A UK model and so landed themselves with a problem !

They have given me free 3 months insurance and appologised mentally.

oh!! I drove my old mans seat toledo for 2 weeks while my z was off the road. He had no insurance on it at the time. That means me's a criminal !!

Bloody lucky as was going down the 404M in the Seat doing nearly a ton and hit a crow- went straight into the windscreen. Luckily it didnt smash, but could have all ended in tears if I had lost it a bit and clipped something.

My Dad however was not very impressed when I gave back the car with blood up the windscreen

I asked a mate who is in insurance and as far as he knew the problem is not while you are driving it, but when its parked. You are covered under your policy to drive another car third party (at least) which is the minimum required but, and its a biggie, when you park the car and walk away your insurance goes with you, so the car is on the public highway uninsured. Simple answer, to me at least, is not to park it on the road.

Most ppl say the other car has to be insured, but i drove a second car registered in someone elses name and not insured by anyone for about a year.

I phoned my ins' company to confirm in writing that it was legal and i would be covered third party to drive any uninsured car, and they did.

So all you ppl with two cars, register the second in ya mums name and drive both on one policy. Could be handy for speed camera offences too!

true to all the above, but third party is the only cover you will have

so if you "break" your bruvs car, you won't be covered unless your a named driver

Cheers guys, I ended up changing my insurance over from the Zed to my brothers car. When my car is road worthy I'll change it back. Norwich Union will allow you to change the car with no fee for doing so.

The info you've given me will come handy in future no doubt :)

thanks for putting my mind at rest. I'm not the criminal I thought I was.

I guess if we drive cars this way, make sure they're old bangers not worth nicking :)

I had the stupid situation where I had an old Fiesta for sale, not being driven, just sitting in my normal parking space for a few weeks and I'd moved the insurance onto the mondeo. Finally got round to advertising it and when the 1st person came to view, that morning one of my neighbours had backed into it  and boshed up the wing.

When filling out the claim form he asked for my insurance details - it wasnt insured, my opinion was that why should it be?? In case someone stubs their toe on it and sues me? How much harm can a stationary car in a parking space on a cul-de-sac cause FFS??

I ran AA legal services who said that the insurance would probably pay out but would be obliged to inform the police of an "uninsured car on the highway". FFS The shit you hear chavs getting away with every day in the news!! I bet I'd have got the full whack, 5points and £1000 fine or whatever.

In the end the neighbour was nice about it and gave my £200 and I sold the car to a smalltime trader for £200 less than advertised, everyones a winner ;)

Sorry, back to the origianl popint - yeah the car does have to be insured by someone else.

What annoys me is that why cant a already insured car be insured temporarily for someone else to drive?? It's not that unusual a situation  Its not as if there would be 2 claims in an accident!

[/Rant] ;)
