Hi all,

 

I've recently bought a Zed, and it arrived into the country in December. Since I picked it up I've became an bit of a Zed Head.

 

Its a 1991 2+2 NA Auto with Leather etc. in yellow pearl with 63k on the clock. It was totally standard but had a few parking scuffs and dings here and there so I got my hands dirty and treated it to a little work..

 

As I mentioned everything was standard when I got it, and I'm not overly concerned about all out performance (or I would have suffered the extra insurance and got the turbo :) ) but I have been thinking about doing a few mods so I hope you guys can help.

 

Firstly, what difference can I expect if I remove the air intake and fit a K+N type filter in front of the air flow sensor? Will it make any noticible difference to the performance, fuel consumption or drivability. I've done a bit of reading and heard claims of 18bhp increases with this upgrade alone, surely not?

 

Secondly, it sounds to me like there might be a slight blow from the passenger side exhaust. Only noticeable from inside the car, when driving under light to medium load (under heavy load you can hear it over the engine roar), and its not there when crusing at a constant speed. Any suggestions as to a likely spot where this is coming from? The exhaust is standard and looks and feels to be in very good condition with no noise from anywhere else.

 

 

Just realised how much im writing, sorry to rant on but any help or advice would be appreciated. I would also like to post some pics but I dont seem to be able to on this forum, any suggestions?

without wanting too p!ss you off on your 1st post, a UK TT can be cheaper to insure than an NA as its an import!! ;)

 

18bhp for a filter is for a TT, & is prob a little generous on its own. I would have thought 5-10bhp on a NA for just a filter

I'm with Norwich Union and they quoted me the same price for a UK car as for an Import. I'm only 23 so most complanies would not quote me on a 300zx at all. Ended up paying £348, only TPTF but on a 13 year old car I did not feel the need for fully comp (touch wood :) )

 

I'm still trying to figure out how to post some pics. I mentioned in my earlier post that I got my hands dirty and treated it to soom work....well part of that work was a full respray in pearl top coat, I did it myself in the evenings after work, the first paint job i've ever done so im interested to see what you all think.

any suggestions?

As for the filter, I would expect around 5bhp increase is realistic for an N/A. Possibly around 10-15bhp for a TT for this mod alone. The effects would be increased when combined with other mods, say a less restrictive exhaust.

am just a bit worried about your insurance as mine is an import and i tried to get a quote from norwich union who told me they dont insure imports that were manufactured before 1995 (i rang twice to check).

If only the insurance had been the same price... They told me that the N/A was group 18 and the TT was group 20... and £200 more to insure!!! They never mentioned that the N/A was never sold it the UK, to be honest I dont think the girl on the phone would have known that anyway :) What she did say was that they dont charge more for imports. I used to have a Jap Prelude 2.2 VTEC and the insurance was the same proce as the UK model.

 

At the time I bought the car I wanted to got for the N/A anyway. I'd been into McKay Trading, a car importers in Edinburgh, and the owner (Kay McKay - really!!) told me to stay away from the turbo models as he said the turbo seals were always going... of course this may have been due to the fact that he was trying to flog me a N/A at the time. However, the fact the car broke down during the test drive made me decide against it :)

i think you must have got a right pleb on the phone m8

norwich union are one of the few who have no quibbles about insuring

imports, my first insurance on the z was with them, and have insured two different pajeros with them

welcome mate. a) yes deffo get a replacement filter (and like Richard said expect 5-10bhp for NA and 10-15bhp for TT), b) exhaust-wise i got exactly the same problem at the moment. the exhaust sounds ok idling but goes 'dirty' when revving up to 3000, then hidden by engine after that. my leak is a gasket between the manifold and the middle section on the nearside but cant be arsed to sort it out yet!

Here is the car when i picked it up. Complete with a little dent on the wheel arch, some scratches here and there and slightly faded yellow paint which may or may not be visable in the photo (i can see it but I know where they were :) )

Still cant quite believe what an overlooked bargin the zx is, all I've spent so far is £3100 and it turns so many heads.

 

I now understand what you guys have known for years...these cars rule.

It took just over a week doing 3-4 hours after work each day to prep and paint it. Like I said, its the first complete car ive ever done so I took my time.

 

I've got paint left over but im not sure if i want to paint that part. I was thinking about it but I decided not to. I did make a few mock-ups with photoshop the other day to see how it would look. I'm still undecided. But curiosity might get the better of me......

welcome mate, car looks to be a blinder. As said above, the best mod you can make is to subscribe, for 20 quid you get thousands of pounds worth of on tap advice. Filter is a good start, if the exhaust is leaking from a gasket, while your sorting it , take the cats off and remove the guts from inside them (there is no requirement for them on a mot for your car) and it will add a similiar amount to your performance (5-10 bhp), then sort yourself out a chip (I may be able to "find" you one ;) for nothing if you subscribe) to sort out your fuelling.

definatley paint over it, my red import has had it painted n it looks miles better than with th ugly black strip
