Well, just been up to get my aircon charged up after getting my second hand compressor fitted. Whole thing went really well. (cheers for the compressor Jock, it’s working a treat :) )

Unfortunately, as the guy was testing it he noticed the aircon fan didn’t come on. He waited until the pressure was nearly up to 300 (psi I guess??) to see if it was on a pressure switch but nowt happened. When should this come on? Should it work as soon as the aircon compressor is engaged? Is there a way to test it? Is there something simple like a fuse that might have blown??

Frustrating knowing that it all works but can’t risk using it!!

Cheers

IIRC there is no pressure switch on the aircon system as there is on most cars, it is run by engine temp only (i think the engine ecu switches this, & switches it on a little sooner if a/c is on)

will have to check tho to be deffo

The zed system can go to much more than 300psi. I think the blow off valve is at 550.

I think you can make the engine fan go on by unplugging the temp sensor. You should check the aircon manual - its like war and peace.

The zed system looks at speed of the car and water temperature to decide on whether it needs to also use the leccy fan. It wont use it unless it has too. The engine driven one already moves plenty air. And may already keep the water temp too low to engage it unless its 30C outside.

The scenarios are in the manual

In fact it says for NA with aircon on - speed below 24mph and water temp below 94 fan is off. water above 95 fan is on. speed above 25mph water below 104 fan is off. Water above 105 fan is on.

With aircon off and water temp below 104 fan is off. above 105 fan is on.

Turbos have 2 speed leccy fan and more conditions for fans

So sayeth the words of the manual EF & EC31 eecs

 well, I guess I did ask! :D

So with a cold engine and car stationary nothing was ever going to happen! Cheers for that. I'll unplug the temp sensor (the yellow one or the other one?) and check the fan works for peace of mind then hit that 'econ' button and chill out

The guy doing my aircon recommended fitting a relay, switched when the aircon compressor engages to power the fan. I take it this isn't required then

Thanks all

David

Its the big temp sensor.

Also if you hit econ then you wont chill out - it cuts off the aircon compressor so there would be no chillin or dryin of air on wet days. saves a bit of fuel tho and if you dont need chillin why chill. The system still tries to maintain a steady set temp using outside air.

auto has it all on - you'll hear the rpm immediately pick up on idle so it can drive the compressor.

You dont need to add any relays

It is recommended that at least once a week the aircon is used as it runs the compressor and circulates the lubricant mixed with the refridgerant - helps prevent compressor seizing.

Zed is clever so that when you floor it and need all hands to the wheel so to speak the aircon compressor cuts out while your foot is on the floor.

On warm days with it on you will see puddles of water under the car while the condensed water drips out from the chiller.

Ah, but I've been driving with 'econ' on pretty much since I got the car! Hitting the button to turn econ off and switch air con on! ;)

I've been trying the aircon out a bit tonight - and nothings gone pop yet :) But when I first switch it on I'm getting a bit of a squeal. It sounds like the belt is slipping. Is it likely to be a simple adjustment or is it going to be a symptom of a less than healthy compressor or something?

Cheers for that one, tried it today an the fan goes just fine! Used the opportunity to clean the contacts a bit!

Think I just need to get that belt tightened and I'll be sorted
