Joining the euro?

Soz 4 ranting, this is mildly amusing, doing the rounds on email

Government Announcement

A Downing Street spokesman has confirmed that in order to meet the conditions for joining the Euro the phrase 'spending a penny' is not to be used after the 31st of December 2001. From this date the correct terminology will be 'euronating'.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too! Thanks Dave for beating me to it...LOL

See my post about an EVO caining said R1 at 152mph on the overtake. I know an R1 can do alot more than that but I think he was caught with a certain "surprise" element.

Coz I also noticed that the GTi-R top speed is 130mph due to the high gear ratios designed for rallying.

Hi,

Do you really want me to go into depth about the anti-lag, I can if you want but it will be explained no differently to what you already must know (as you have turbo cars you must have looked into/heard of ALS).

It is all the gears that have the different ratios (apart from reverse) and also the final drive is different. (these are sold primarily to group N customers but some are sold for road/track use, as opposed to actual rally use. Just not many people choose to do this).

Yes I mentioned 130 mph, I didnt say 130mph limit did I?? But when you get to them speeds, aerodynamics play a lot more of a part, there is only so fast big torque and power can pull you, and lets face it, the EVO is not for top speed runs is it. Im sure it sould go on to 160odd (I assume it pulls to the redline in 5th?!?! I dont know), why do I want to do that, if I get caught I have no licence and no car.

Also, I have not done 8000 rpm in 5th, I know there is an rpm limit of 8000, in reference to me looking at the black stuff was when I was on track (did I not say that), on the motorway I do no more than 75, cos there is no skill in speeding on a motorway

There are no details that you can find elsewhere on the internet, I can explain all these things if you like though.

See Ya

At least my car doesn't look like a halfords shop window biggrin.gif LMAO

CheerZ,

Yeah!...We really believe you A3388, now off you run, or you will be late for your driving lesson in Mummy's Punto!

Yes please, I am very interested in the anti-lag and I don't know anything about the system fitted to the Mitsi which was why I asked.

I'm sure information is available on the net but we have a forum to share information and I'm interested in hearing about it. Your participation in the forum is welcome so get sharing !

Incidentally, my suggestion of the top speed of 130 mph was based on what you wrote "who wants to go more than 130, I could get a gearbox that would see me further up the MPH numbers". Kind of implied to me that 130 was your top speed with your current gearbox.

One final point, I don't own a turbo car.

Thanks

Dave

Top speed is not that high?

Then you say it would do 160mph? Hmmm maby my understanding of what is a high speed needs to be reassesed.

Now what speed box is in that car 5/6?

Oh and not what autocar says cause i have that article about the evo rs.

------------------

superguy.jpg BUFF MAN!!!!

Harving much expericence writh EVO i can trell you the rs 450 is not arll it is made out to be. Hrave wery weak gearbox and the accerloratin times are not tru, all we got on dyno tune was 380 bph, then block tends to crack in three places.

Oh Dave you are dispiccable!!!

Ay, David did have a Turbo car...before he got a TreVoR! LOL!

Tim

Hi,

Als is what it is, why do you expect Mistubishi to be running a different style of als to any other group N car?

+Lift off accelerator

+Ignition retarded

+Fuel/air into chambers through bypass valve

+Due to retardation mixture gets to exhaust valves mostly unburnt

+As exhaust valves open spark plug fires mixture hits exhaust pipes as well

+Big explosion keeps turbo spinning.

+No lag as turbo spins at operational speed all the time.

Ok the 'top speed' may be high, but I dont want to run my car at such high revs for such a long time, therefore usable top speed is not high, what are you happy cruising your car at? im not happy cruising at 6000rpm+ OK. You also made incorrect assumptions about other things as well.

The gearbox that I have is the 5 speed Hewland built dog box. Not any 6 speed you may have heard about.

Nakagima, I dont have a weak gearbox anyway, if you say the normal rs450 gearbox is weak then thats OK. You also say you have only seen 380 bhp, that ok too as I havent put mine on the roling road to 'tune' it, cos I dont really want to so I dont know, it certainly is fast. You say acceleration times arent true OK then as I said, I havent achieved those times.

May I say, the majority of you people seem to be very unsavoury types. Aparently you say my sharing on the forum is welcome, well that doesnt seem very true does it, due to what others are saying, and i can say that you are a quite dispickable set of people, a couple of people excepted.

Goodbye and happy porsche/ferrari racing, you may keep up with them you may beat them, I know what Id sooner be driving! And it aint Japanese

I'd ignore them if I were you Mr. Ay...most are just jealous to be honest and that's the way people show jealousy best! By acting like a Leo!

Saw a post on the Lancer Register, some guy at Trax(arse event IMO and won't be going next year! Not that I went this year, stayed at home and watched the football which lookin' back was a smart move...LMFAO!) in an Evo won the 0-60 comp. 3.82 secs I think he said.

FUCKING LARGE!

Tim

;-)

Timmy, you're turning into a proper little diplomat biggrin.gif

FIRESTARTER!

AY,

Please tell us who you think are the exceptions to your generalisation.

The anti-lag sounds interesting. I've never heard of that sort of system. Doesn't it very rapidly burn out exhaust valves & their seats ?

Dave

Bang-bang (also known as ALS which stands for Anti-Lag System) is an engine management technique that allows to minimize the turbo lag time.

As you might be aware of, turbochargers display what is known as lag time which is the time needed for the turbine to reach its full throttle from an intermediate rotational speed state. The duration of a turbocharger's lag depends on many factors among which its inertia, airflow efficiency, back pressure, etc. The problem is partly dealt with by fitting a turbo dump valve, which acts each time the driver lifts his foot from the throttle. The dump valve will evacuate the pressurized air coming out of the turbocharger while the inlet manifold is closed thus allowing the turbine not to stall and avoiding possible damage to its bearings. In race cars it is very common to fit oversized turbochargers in order to be able to produce enough boost pressure and assure a sufficient engine output. Big turbochargers display significant amounts of lag due to their increased rotational inertia. In such cases the dump valve is insufficient to allow the turbocharger not to loose too much speed when the driver lifts off. Additionally rally cars hold a turbo restrictor, which is regulated by the FIA. One of the restrictor' effects is to increase lag time. This is why in racing cars, and more specifically in rally cars, where torque and engine availability are critical factors, most applications use anti-lag systems.

During lag time the engine is much less responsive and its output well below nominal. To counter the effect of the turbo's lag time drivers used to anticipate the engine's reactions by accelerating well before they would have done in a non-turbo car. Others have used a technique, introduced by the German driver Walter Röhrl, known as "left foot braking" where the driver uses his left foot to brake the car while his right foot accelerates to keep the turbocharger in optimal load. ALS was a simple idea but one that was relatively difficult to implement. Only when electronic engine management systems were advanced enough to allow taking into consideration many more parameters than in the past it became possible to use them efficiently in handling ALS. To the best of my knowledge Toyota Team Europe were the first to use it in racing (Toyota's implementation is known as Toyota Combustion Control System while Mitsubishi call the system Post Combustion Control System).

How ALS works

When the driver lifts his foot from the gas pedal the ignition timing is altered with sometimes 40° or more of delay (retard) and the intake air and fuel supply mixture is made richer . This results in air/fuel mixture that keeps getting in the combustion chambers, through an additional bypass valve, when the driver no longer accelerates. The ignition being delayed, the air/fuel mixture reaches the exhaust tubes mostly unburned. When the spark plug fires, the exhaust valve is starting to open due to the ignition delay mentioned above. Additionally, the exhaust temperature being extremely high, the unburned fuel explodes at the contact of the exhaust tubes. Luckily the turbo sits right there and the explosion keeps it turning (otherwise it would slow down since its intake, the exhaust gases, is cut-off). The effect is a vastly lower response times with some downsides:

A quick rise of the turbo's temperature (which jumps from ~800°C to the 1100°C+ region) whenever the system is activated

A huge stress on the exhaust manifold and pipes (mounted on a street car a bang-bang system would destroy the exhaust system within 50-100 km)

The explosions which occur in the exhaust tubes generate important flames which can, sometimes, be seen at the end of the exhaust tube

Reduced engine brake

The bang-bang system got its name from the loud explosion noises one hears whenever the driver lifts his right foot. Depending on the implementation, ALS systems are more or less aggressive. While the systems mounted in Toyota and Mitsubishi racing cars are relatively smooth and noiseless those fitted in Ford and Subaru cars are much more noisy and aggressive. Most racing implementations have user selectable anti-lag settings depending on the terrain, usually three settings can be selected by the driver going from moderate to very aggressive.

Note also that some regional or national European events prohibit the use of ALS systems.

So mr AY478592 CAN we expect to see you at our dyno day then?

Been having real trouble gettin' off to sleep lately...cheers for that Warren...should do the trick before the end of the first sentence every time! ROFL!

He He believe it or not i typed that all down from my memory of when i owned a evo 1 back in 1992 lol.

Timmy A rs500 cossie did 60 in 3.5 at trax, Just shows that a good old fashioned ford can still cut it with the young Japanese pretenders biggrin.gif

Paul

Wow, yeah, you're right Paul...most impressive!!!! I stand corrected, Evo man did it in 3.72 impressing himself thinking he'd make about 4.5ish. That's bleedin' quick by any standard! Good effort.

Tim

;-)

Warren, I really must get you round sometime to create a complete indexed database of my cutlery collection. I'm sure you'd find it really exciting !!!!!

Dave

P.S. But thanks for the info - very interesting and not at all surprised that it's an equipment wrecker !

LOL!

"Goodbye and happy porsche/ferrari racing, you may keep up with them you may beat them, I know what Id sooner be driving! And it aint Japanese"

If you don't like Japanese cars, although you claim to own one, why post messages on a 300ZX forum?

Seems very unsavoury to me! smile.gif

superguy.jpg BUFF MAN!!!! or is that DUFFMAN????

Hi,

I wont divulge into the exception thanks very much.

Nice write up on the Anti-Lag, I too have seen that site, me thinks you didnt write it from memory.

When did I say I dont like Japanese cars, for gods sake some of you people jump to conclusions, I would sooner have a Ferrari (depends on the model obviously) or a new 996 gt2 or straight turbo than a zx.

OK

See ya

Wow - what a master of the five knucle shuffle.

Stay calm guys and lets just ignore it. Surely we're above this ...

Dave

P.S. Sorry Craig - I know this isn't what we're about but I'd love to see the forum back to what it used to be.
