my trusty z starts brilliantly, you can leave it to tick over no problem, but if i drive away, it will stall when i stop the car, until the engine temp warms up to about half way. This means i have to slip the auto gearbox into neutral every time i come to stop, until it eventually reaches the correct temp. is this easy to put right, or does it have to go to the nissan dealer to solve it??

ive had this in an old car, used to stall at junctions, i put it down to dodgy fuel from a local garage, everythime i went there to fill up it would to it, fill up with shell and no problem. May or may not be the same thing as this was a crappy old escort 1.3 . Whether the fuel was shit or whether they didnt clean the tanks i dont know.

1. The fuel pump may have a problem. Demand for fuel by engine reduces as foot is taken off and not enough fuel therefore stalls...

2. Auto box may be sticking until transmission fluid warms up. Does it definatley change down from 2nd to 1st gear as you are slowing down???? If its stalling in 2nd you have your answer. If its stalling in first then its not disengaging the clutch correctly. Dont know much about ZED autoboxes so specific common probs i am not familiar with. Parents old renault 25 did it.

May i suggest getting a manual ;)

More like a candidate for a clean of the throttle bodies and give the idle valve a good squirt of carb cleaner as well then re set the idle speed correctly.

it doesn't stall in second, the car stops properly, then it's 50-50 as to whether it stalls when you want to pull away. sometimes you can stop it from happening if you slip it into neutral and just blip the throttle a bit as you change back to drive. as i said, if you just leave the car stationary to idle, it won't stall. only seems to do it if it comes to standstill in "drive", also does it if you stop and try to reverse. once the engine temp reaches half way, it wont stall at all, whatever the gear box is in

Throttle bodies and fuel sender. had same trouble

  • Author

thanks for that dev, is it a case of re-newing the throttle bodies and fuel sender then? is it a garage job, or easy to do myself? can you remember how much the parts were?

Yeah just clean them - good periodic maintanance anyway ;)

Quick test for you to try though first ;) When you switch the aircon in and out of economy mode, does the engine jump between 750 and ~900 rpm? If not then I know what your problem is ;)

  • Author

hello andy, yes the rpm does jump when the economy is switched in and out. the car ticks over from cold at just over 1000, so switching on economy, the revs dip to about 1000, i guess when the engine temp gets higher, it probably equates to 750 - 900 ish, so is this the related to the fuel delivery problem?

Ok then, your FICD (fast idle control valve) is working fine - if this wasn't working then you'd get the exact symptoms you describe. Can you stop the engine stalling by engaging the air con then?

  • Author

andy, no, the air con does not stop the engine stalling, so is it a case of just cleaning the throttle bodies etc?

Andy, while your in fault finding mode, can you do me a favour and tell me what my prob can be,and also where this fast idle doofer is so i can know if im cleaning the right bit!!

My engine seems like its been racing a bit recently, so i cleaned the tb's, and since then its ticked over closer to 1000, still racing, ie pull up at junctions knock it into N and the revs rise to 1200 or so sometimes as high as 1500 then settle back down.

Any thoughts greatly recieved.

Maybe they should open a new forum and call it "Ask Andy"!!!
