Fan running at engine speed on first switch on...

Weird one this, but I'm sure it didn't used to do it...

 

when I first start the car, its turning over at 2K or so (while cold) but I can hear the fan really loud... as I rev the engine up the fan is clearly speeding up too 'wooshhhhh' as you rev the engine...

 

But then once the car warms up (and the idle comes down to normal

 

So, I'm assuming that the fan isn't supposed to be speeding up with the engine like this... kinda weird. It's like something is sticking ?

 

any ideas ?

Sounds like the viscous coupling isn't working (slipping) properly when the car is stone cold.. Not too much to worry about but it'll probably eventually fail when hot too - not too bad apart from the distinct loss in power, and it'll sound like you are driving a hoover..

 

Try turning the fan when the engine is stone cold (by hand), if it's *really* hard to turn, then the clutch is dieing...

 

New one isn't *too* hard to install.. But not cheap..

My fan does that too when I first start, but its easy to turn the fan when its stopped. Engine doesnt over heat infact it says at the perfect temperature.

It's probably due to the colder mornings. The nights are fair drawing in etc! Means the viscous coupling oil is thicker=more drag equals fan doing the whoosh thing more when cold. Once the oil in the fan gets a little warmer and thinner you wont hear it again as it does the slip thing. Besides you should know better than to rev a cold turbo'd engine! Treat em gently when cold-just like a woman! You never know, it could make it perform better and last longer! The car would too!

thanks guys...so how much/how easy a job is replacing the viscous coupling then ? Is it something that can be repaired at all ? or get from a breakers ?

It's funny - I paid attention to what the fan does on my car the other morning.. And it does the same - spins v.v. fast for the first 5 or 10 seconds and then slows down...

 

Bizarre.. Not sure if it's supposed to or not now! Mine is quite stiff when cold (ooer!) so perhaps mine's on its way out too.. Not sure... d'oh!

yeh, but mine does it for a few minutes, not seconds. And when you stop at traffic lights, etc it then seems to stick again, when you drive away then frees after another minute. You hear it going like a lair dryer then suddenly fade away as it frees again. Very wierd.
