How do i tell if my zed has been chipped?

if it has and the HKS EVC is disconnected will this cause problems

eg my code 34 at the moment (replacing plugs tomorrow)

if i disconnect the battery to reset the ECU

then reconnect and run the engine for 10-30 seconds then turn it off

will this then give me a diagnostics flash on the dash!

or is this an urban legend

if the new plugs dont solve it is a knock sensor bypass worth trying

or should i take it to some one to find out exactly what my zed has and get it all reconnected

any help apprietiated

How to tell it's chipped:

Take ECU out of passenger footwell. (10mm socket reqd.) Open observing anti-static precautions. (Phillips screws at corners.)

http://www.ttzd.com/izcctech.html for plenty more detail!

Mines got a Nissan official recon unit in it and a weird white label with scrawlings on it on the EPROM, so I'm thinking... chipped!

If you're running higher boost and it HASN'T been chipped you'll likely have problems.

When you say the EVC is "disconnected" what do you mean? I don't think boost controllers usually frig any signals to/from the ECU - they just use them for reference - so you should be OK... except something must be controlling the wastegate solenoids, and if the EVC isn't you better make darn sure the ECU is.

Code 34 indicates a missing/bad signal from the det sensor harness more often than it indicates actual det - there's a bypass you can try to eliminate as a problem - search for "det sensor AND bypass AND resistor" or something similar...

Can you HEAR det?

If you know you've got a code 34 sounds like you already know how to get diags - I did hear a rumour you could do it by some method like you mention but doesn't seem very good for the car to me! So UL or not I wouldn't do it...

What's the background... have you bought a previously modded car that's been un-modded?

Code 34 will NOT be produced by Det - only by a bad connection/bad sender.

To see if its been chipped, you need to open up the ECU - or it may have a 'piggy back' computer hashed into the harness, typical example being HKS FCON...

ECU doesn't control the wastegates, only the stock boost solenoids - these should be disconnected for the EVC anyway so you'll be running on 7psi unless they reconnected them, in which case you'll STILL have 7psi due to the code 34 ;)

Yeah I didn't phrase that very well...

I meant weird things will happen if the ECU ISN'T connected to the stock solenoids AND the EVC isn't connected either!

Sorry, gotcha - all that will happen is he'll get 7psi, which he'll get anyway due to the code 34.....

car history-

got it from a member 3 weeks ago

he got it from an importer in june 2003

car was std so i was told

air filter had disintegrated

just changed plugs today

plugs were in terrible condition (back 2 really bad)

changed the oil

waiting for the road to dry to test it

Might be worth a look in the bigger intake pipes and the throttle bodies etc to see if you've got bits of air filter all round the system then

If the plugs were dead fair enough, I was just suggesting you might like to find out if you had det before you put another set of plugs in and kill those too, IYSWIM!

So where does the boost controller come into it? Have you added that?

  • Author

boost controller was in the glove box

turning it on did nothing

but if i had a code 34 then i suppose it wont work anyway!

Thats the thing about boost controllers. You have to disconnect the stock boost solenoids for the controller to work properly, therefore removing the ECUs ability to put the car into safety boost. In other words, if the boost controller was fitted and setup, then yes you would get higher than 7psi....

Yeah. If you've got a boost controller cabled in, switch it on for sure. But, you won't get safety boost. I'd be inclined to turn the boost down on the controller to 7psi until you've got everything sorted and you're confident you understand what's going on (cos I certainly don't LOL)

I reckon you should fish around the vac lines down the side of the plenum, and work out...

a) If the stock solenoids are still connected (can't tell you where they are off the top of my head... try searching on here?)

and

b) Where your boost controller solenoids are (follow the electrickery, should be easy to spot because it won't look like the stock harness)

Doesn't really sound like your car was stock after all. ;)

The ecu will still think its in safety boost though so you will be in the knock maps - this will mean the ecu is advancing the ignition slightly for an extra margin of safety ;)

John Dixon could tell you more....

That will be retarding the ignition then Andy

Yep - I actually meant to put that - **** knows what happened  Too much eagerness for the old lunchtime :duffer: I think
