Just toying with the idea of fitting a lightened flywheel. Has anyone fitted one and if so does it really make the engine more responsive because after all it is a fraction of the weight of the crank, gearbox input shaft (or torque convertor) plus pulley (+ everything attached to it).

Cheers

I have a JUN lightened flywheel really makes a difference to the responsiveness of the engine. Easier reving, faster spool up etc.

If you want lighter front pulleys aswell then make sure you have a harmonic dampener in the crank pulley!

Well worth it IMO.

Steve

yup, iv got both now. a nice increase in responsiveness from the throttle :)

Ditto - makes a big difference, gives more 'driveability' :)

I've the lite weight flywheel on mine and yep noticed a difference in accleration, pulley being done soon too, but even better, i've both items in stock in anyone wants em.......

And there's a load of posts about the harmonic balancing malarchy here and on TT net. Most people think that you don't need to spend the money !

i would say that the stock is a very good harmonic damper as there is more noise from the engine now, however it is the torsional damper side which i feel is fine with the lightwieght pulley, as there is no noticable difference in vibration/smoothness IMO

Paul, I'm not sure if you're agreeing with the general concensus I was reporting or not! :D

I look at it this way,

paulc has done everything most people warn you not too do,

the result? a 400bhp daily driver zed that is going strong after 100k miles :)

Nigel - what I was saying is that i believe the stock pulley is used as a harmonic damper (to get rid of noise), not a torsional damper (to get rid of vibration)

so if you fit a lightweight pulley, then you will notice more noise, but no additional vibration (which may be harmful)

What flywheel is the best quality/value for money?

AHHHHEEEEEEMMMM

Has anyone who has fitted one of these kits, got an aftermarket temperature gauge?

yup me, running temp gone up by 2-3 degrees F when stationary. Nothing major though as I have a bigger rad ;)

Fair point!! Ancilliaries being driven slower? Water pump, alternator, a/c !!!

To the best of my research, you will only benefit from the likes of lightened front pulleys when driving on the track at 10/10's.

Go with a lightened flywheel and keep the stock front pulley setup!! ;)

Steve

cant remember exact figures, but it was around 1/2 the weight of the stock one IIRC

Give or take a few ounces all lite weight flywheels weigh virtually half the stock weight one.
