I would never do it, but I have heard that it is ok to mix fully synthetic oil with standard mineral oil, due to the fact that "fully synthetic" oil is a bit of a "con", that its really just mineral oil refined one stage further, or something like that. Is this true?

Thanks

Synthetic oil is manufactured rather than refined mineral oil, but I think it is manufactured using mineral oil components

In theory you "can" top up the sump using a different type of oil but in high performance applications I would say best not. If you don't know what type of oil is in the sump either drain and refill, or when simply topping up use semi-synthetic until the next oil change.

The Oil FAQ is a good source of info. You can mix synthetic with dino oil OK. Some synthetic oil base is made by "cracking" dino oil and some is made from synthetic PAO. Some people consider the cracked oil not to be truly synthetic.
