Did you check the timing with the engine at normal operating temperature?

The timing will advance if the ecu thinks that the engine is running from cold.

Check your engine temperature sensor and clean the connector.

Ok Steve will check it out,got to go work now, doit in mornin, the temp sender is new so that should be ok,when doing check engine was hot as i had been for run, pesky connectors i bet

If you've got the conZult on, wait until the engine is at ~80°C to test it.

Also you can check the temp sensor by watching it warm up.

Idle needs to be below 800rpm to be on the 15° site I think.

Good point John......

If you have conzult, make sure that the idle switch is 'on' at idle and the rpm is correct. If the idle doesn't switch then adjust your TPS (0.40-0.44v)

Tony,

Not having seen this before during a "live" ConZult test - I would suggest you look in the area of a temp sensor problem or possibly the CAS connector.

Just to throw another theory in to the ring, going back to my days of owning a silvia it happened a couple of times to me and the guy at nissan showed me that with the TPS being incorrectly set the timing gradually moves away from 15 degrees and advances, it never retards always the opposite direction. Altered timing twice over a 6 month period before going to nissan to get it sorted, so worth checking fella.

Tony,

Where are you taking the reading from ??? when taking the reading I usually use cylinder one but for some reason on some Zeds this seems to throw up 25 degrees so I have to use the little bit of cable of the PTU connector and this gives me the proper reading i.e 15ish. funnily enough this happened to Hermans on Sunday , cylinder 1 gave 25 degrees where as the PTU wire gave 15 ish, weird how this only happens on some cars

Mine is the opisit. 25 on the wire and 15 on the cilinder.

If using an inductive clamp, do NOT let the clamp close - just put the wire in the channel and tie-wrap the jaw open ;) Gives a nice consistent reading every time ;)
