Pcv....

I decided to do some investigating into why my car had a crappy tickover and stalled occationally when braking hard. I first cleaned the TB's which didnt help too much but I got myself a face full of black sh*te as an added bonus!(those carb cleaner sprays have a hell of a kick! :mac1: ) Today I decided to have a look at the PCV valves, moved all the crap out of the way on the drivers side and found that the pipe leading from that one was split and hanging off. I replaced the pipe and the valve looks near new, didnt get a chance to look at the passenger side as it started raining. The problem is now, I cant get the car to tick over unless I have the aircon turned on (which has always bumped the revs up for me). Should I adjust the base idle or is there something im missing? I left the battery off whilst I did the work to reset the ecu, the car feels better but I need it to tickover!

Yeah, it seems to be that once you've fixed the basic idle you've got to tell the rest of the system it hasn't got a problem any more, and stop compensating for it please...

...so adjust your base idle all over again! Otherwise the ECU and the idle system fight over who has the best idea of what "idle" really is!

I did the other valve yesterday and found another split pipe:( replaced that and the idle was crap still. I tried to adjust the idle but the screw didnt seem to make much difference, im guessing now that i have more air leaks:( its also started to hesitate when i pull off, the revs die before picking up again.

did you clean the idle valve with carb cleaner? just spray shitloads into that, also did you reset the ecu?

to reset the idle you have to unplug the connector by the valve and then turn the idle to 700rpm and then plug the connector back in which will raise the idle 50rpm to 750.

yeah i took the idle valve off and it wasnt too bad, gave it a good dosing of carb cleaner and got myself yet more in the eye! :mac1: I left the battery off while I did all the work so it should have reset the ecu. As for the idle, I did what you said, took the plug off but I couldnt really get it to settle at 700 rpm without stalling because as soon as I revved it, it just went to stall. When I put the plug back on the revs shot up about 500rpm then settled down to about 1k then just died again. Now the only way I can get it to tickover is to have the 'auto' button on for the A/C on but now has the hesitation problem. :(

ECU temp sensor then... search for more details, 'cos there's a thread on this comes up once a week!

thats fine too:D ive read every post from the past billion years on hesitation and cleaned all the plugs not so long ago. Ill keep fiddling, always the best way!;)

have you checked you put your pipes back on correctly with no air leaks? also check that you havn't knocked any smaller pipes off around the TB's. Sounds like you have a small air leak to me.

also check ECU for error codes, just on the off chance something crops up.

after cleaning the TB's the car is a pig to start for about 30 seconds but should be ok once its going, how much carb cleaner did you use? lol

PPPPLENTY:D Your right the car was a pig to start but it did start, just got some silicone from smithy so gonna replace as many boost hoses as I can. Will see what that does!

Replaced all the hoses I could get to, found another split one...the one under the N/S TB. Started it up now and it runs nicely at a steady 1200rpm so looks like I just need to sort the base idle again and all will be well:D

thanks for all the advice.
