I often think the same thing. Even the Jap car magazines rarely mention the 300ZX

I guess by putting for example an Impreza in EVERY (anyone else noticed that?) issue they are pandering to the masses, understandable so I guess. Scoobies are so common nowadays tho, when reading Banzai or the like I flick past the Imprezas usually hehe.

Maybe it's because we are so rare, mysterious and exclusive? ;)

Pete

93 on jeremy clarksons top 100 cars!!!!!

I dont think people know the potential they have, they learning around southend though

Skylines are rare but seem to draw people and respect from fellow sports car owners (not just saying that cos i have one), Subaru`s are common so have a huge following and like the Evo gain respect from the rally scene. 300`s however haven`t really done anything to get noticed for, they are however in my opinion one of the most underated and best value for money motors out there. Show me another car with the comfort, performance and power for the same 5K you can get one for.............nothing.

So no real answer to the original question apart from what have they done to get noticed?

Bob

What have I done to get noticed?

Well, I have the finest exhaust tone I have ever heard bar NONE ! (cheers to Luke and his marvellous Mongoose!)

Plus, I have a car that can blitz virtually anything out there and give cars that cost 50K more a very serious run for their money.

Personally, I like the anonynimity. One or two people have said "that's a nice kit mate". Kit car? weighing 1.5 tons? Yeah, right! I love the fact that I get poked by scooby's and evo's that just do not know what they are screwing with.

One of the primary reasons I bought my Zed is that it matches my personality so well:

1/ It can be a quiet pussycat or a raging maniac

2/ It has a huuuuuuge ego

3/ No average joe knows what it is really capable of

I say enjoy it. Those who know their cars will respect it. As for the others.....blow them into the gutter with all the other trash.

ZXs have done a lot to gain a name, just not in this country. Paul Newman raced them and won 3 championships in a row and it holds the most wins in its category in a season.

Again in Japan it won many championships with them in 90s, but in Europe it didnt do anything. I actually thing the 300ZX won the most different types of championships than any other single car.

It raced in Le Mans and won its category and I think I remember seeing one year it came 6th beating load of cars in higher categories.

Ask most Americans who know a little about a car if they know what a 300ZX is and they will. I have had mechanics asking what my car is.

They are not as well known in europe because you dont see them in car mags with nasty body kits on, or watch them buring 3 months of rubber in a burn out or doing doughnuts, and personally I am glad of that.

I love it when people look at you with wonder, scratching there heads!! The amount of people who say "nice car"....."what is it??" . Its a good feeling leaving everyone behind in a cloud of dust. Happend the other day.Crusing along minding my own buisness and a new Beemer came behind and flashed me to move...the cheek of it!! Gave him the bird and all he could do was smell the optimax fumes as i left him. Slowed down and the respect due nod was given as he gingerly went past. At least he now knows the wrath of the Z.......

i got stopped in chesterfield after some mates of mine got into a fight i went to pick them up and drove round the corner past loads of police, only to be confronted by a wall of police, heard this guy on the radio saying ive stopped a red car, what make is it, the other guy said er dunno just stop a big red thing lol,

I reckon a big part of it is that the 300ZX is not at the fore of any of the big video games. I know it's in there on Gran Tourismo, but there's so much more on there to beat it that people don't bother with it. As far as the scoobies and Evo's go, well you've got all the 'Collin McRae' type rally games......

Just a thought. :)

the 300ZX doesn't fit into any large niche in the market - those who want a big posy car will tend to buy a new ferrari/Lambo/Porsche etc. as they need a badge which people look up to. Just being good is not good enough for many people - they need automatic approval from others. Those who can't afford those new cars (most people) won't buy that kind of car, so will go for a GTi/Scooby/Evo etc.

A 300ZX says - look I've got money and class - but as u can buy them for £5k you don't need lots of money. So to many it's not the real thing. WYSIWYG with a 300ZX. u get a good car, not an expensive badge - but most can only seee the badge and assume it's cr@p.

...my 2ps worth - the car never stood a chance when it was introduced as it was up against a raft of established (well badged and marketed) European sports cars. We are snobs when it comes to cars - ie if its red it's got to be a Ferrari, Porsche are best and exotic cars only come from Europe. Therefore the 300Z was never going to make it.

Even now if you read ''classic'' magazines, the Z never gets a look in. It totally infuriates me, and I console myself in the knowledge that all of these guys who ignore it don't know what they are missing, and I revel in the fact that it's as rare as rocking horse. I have a (personal) need to be different (I'm a car snob) and the 300Z does it for me.

...long live the Z.

cheerz

I think the main reason is that the last UK registered ZX was made around 10 years ago. They were only sold here in small numbers before that, whereas the Skyline, Scooby and Evo are still in production.

10 years ago when a car as special as the ZX were new (same with Supra - Toyota officially sold 250 per year here) Nissan only made them in small numbers to keep them exclusive. Other mainstream manufacturers (eg Vauxhall with the Calibra, BMW with the 3 series coupe, Audi TT etc) just produced thousands in the name of sales target rivalry and stuff the exclusive factor. This has filtered into the Scooby and Evo now, so everyone has one (Also, check out the most stolen cars.....the list is the same  )The advent of cheap Jap imports has further fuelled this, although the ZX still hasn't become popular due to its age and the fact that coupes still aren't fashionable. (They are un PC  impractical etc)

I love the unknown value. The ZX still turns heads (for the right reasons :hyper: ) and can still do the business when it counts. I've also removed all Nissan badges just to keep the unenlightened guessing....... :D

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i think most of you are right in the fact that the car went out of production and the others are still bein built!snobs still look and wander, and as sad as it sounds i dont get envious at all when a toff drives past in aporsche,i mearly drop it in to 2nd and say bye bye, good to start threads like this,as everyone gets involved and adds info, easier than helping with threads bout engines, gearboxes etc!!!!!!!!!! :D

I have to agree with the general feeling of the above posts.

All the mainstream car magazines arent interested cos they dont understand  !!(and if they dont understand it they run a mile!!)

I used to drive a seriously modified s12 Nissan silvia and virtuallly noone knew what the hell it was, its the same with the zed, an old gent asked me today if it was a ferrari -class! I was parked up the other day and a bunch of lads went past and one went ooh look a skyline?? :nono: ?!!!(ok its r34 bayside blue but come on its so not a skyline made me smile though) just goes to show dunnit.

Mind you its worth remembering that if we drove scooby's ,evo's or skylines nobody would come up and say "what is it??" or "is it a ferrari" now would they :D

I too love the "what is it" factor but am also way pissed off that there isnt more general knowledge in mags etc. but screw em its like being the only ones who know a big secret no-one else does thats why we all smile like idiots when we blow the doors off the aforementioned motors hee hee hee

I've also removed all Nissan badges just to keep the unenlightened guessing

LOL - it's amazing how many people don't have a clue, particularly when de-badged. I've heard people saying "look at that ferrari/lamborghini/etc" - even had a Shell attendant asking if it was a Bugatti EB110!

I look the look of shock, disappointment even, when you tell them its a Nissan.

Not as much as I like the look of "supposedly fast" car and bike owners when you leave then behind in the distance

Dave

HHmmmmmmm - Original Pistons producing 1000PS?

V6 engine which generates big power.

All of intake and exhaust are remade to JUN original, and it is made the most efficient layout in the narrow engine room. The inside of engine was changed into 3.1L with an original piston, conrod, the crank, etc. In that time, it was the monster engine which realizes the output 1000ps or more

When I got my 300 a year ago, I thought it was the end of all this, after all, I knew what they were and gave them the respect due owning a 200 and all.

But, as time goes on you do come across some nob heads dont you?!

Generally I must say tailgaters are reduced to a bare minimum in this car, as anyone can see a car with a zorst on either side that is as low as a supercar and as wide as their missus ass, know that it looks like it means business.

However, I have had some grating comments in my time, by far the best though is when some nob head, who thinks he's mr cool, told his missus who works with me to say I have "Smoke but no Poke", now to put things into perspective, he doesn't even own a car, his missus owns a 950 fiest popular (old shape) which he was driving her to work in at the time, when i accelerated sideways down the road with all 350bhp and rear wheels smoking, he obviously being the jealous nobish type told her to say that to me and also to say what a boy racer I was because I had two large zorsts on my car (although fully functional!!!!!!). I mean what a jealous twat. And anyway who the **** is he to comment!!!

You also get the occasional Mr Cock, now Mr Cock is the preverbial 21st century middle age business man driving a large car with an under powered engine who beleives that he can outrun anything that has four wheels, especialy if it looks moddified as it is clearly a boy racer that has a 1.2 engine in it or something. These are the people who are true cocks, and have no idea what a car even is? they almost fit into the same category as civic type-r and accord type-r owners, or 330 bmw drivers. (the people who 'think' that there 2.0 and 3.0 na's are the fastest on the planet as they live in a box).

As you can tell I can get quite bitter, the truth is, because off all of the stupid monkeys that drive novas, corsa's, astra's, escort's, civic's etc etc, and put big exhaust and rims on their stupid puney engined cars, it tars people who own a decent car who make it look a bit special. Then for the likes of Z's etc, they get misinterpreted as boy racer cars, with 'smoke and no poke' (what a ****ing cock sucker he is, i've really got to hit him).

Also people look no further than age, the keeping up with mrs jones types who if it is any later than 1 year old is a peice of shit.

In all this though, I have had some funny comments. I have had many many more people just come up to me when parking, in a garage etc etc and ask what car it is or comment on how nice it looks/expensive etc etc, which is, really nice. I've had soo many people ask me what it is, and ask if it is a ferrari, even some guy in a highly tuned fiat coupe turbo!! has he not lived! It always makes me smile.

I guess along the line, there are genuine honest people who say 'look at that car thats a bit special / nice' then you get the jealous nob heads who will say anything to slate you, you get the mr jones who doesnt see past your number plate, then you get the mr smith types who tars all boy racer-type cars (anything non-standard looking) and thinks they are rice boxes.

Love it or hate it, thats what we are all gonna get at some point or another.

I say **** IT, i love my car, its fast, fat (as in wide), loud, shit hot, and unusual. I don't really give a **** what anyone else thinks, if they respect it then good if not, then they find out the hard way, or if complete pricks, then I ignore them.

Steve

Pete,

If you want them to cover something you have to come with an idea and push it really hard.

Jap Performance will only do articles about specific cars so what about asking them to write a Buyers Guide? It seems to be all the vogue with JP at the moment.

Banzai are keen to do Dyno days and track events. Did you invite them to your last Dyno day?

Amongst the others you have Track and Race Car: you will have to work seriously hard to get them along

RedLine: They are happy to come along to a lot of things and aren't as bad as the magazine cover might suggest

Happy hunting :D

p.s

the whole ferrari thing was attributed to the twin rear lights and tailgate skin etc.

i bought a zx because i didnt want to drive down the road and see 10 people driving the same car as i was. to my knowledge there is only one other zx in my town which i have only passed once in the12 months ive had mine. everyone stops and looks and it is completly standard, people dont generally stop to look at a scooby because there are so many of them about.

The Zed IS recognised by any pistonhead!!! Its the run of the mill car owner out there who doesn't really know cars. Come on fellows look at the cars people are driving when your stuck in traffic at in rush hour - tons of BMW's, Mondeo's etc. An exotic car on the road is an Audi TT or Porsche Carrera - that is what people think - and the roads are full of them. But in recent years there has been more stuff in mags on the ZX including the modd-mags - and therefore the ZX is recognised by boy racers or Maxers!!!! So don't worry!!! But remember it's got a lot of grunt etc. but handling is on the sloppy side compared to some other great cars, even the Supra TT handles sharper.

Geoff.

Geoff.

surely handling is down to driver ability, unless you(not personally!) have put a supra tt against a zed on a track with the same driver in each how can you possibly tell??

not being a git just interested as to how you come to that conclusion

one more thing have any of you seen the dvd 10 of the best in association with redline its apparently the best road legal cars on uk roads and the for eg..scoobynet put there best scoobys forward for the challenge!and so on with the other supposed best cars there are the only mention of nissan is gtr pulsar and skylines and how can an rs turbo or ford focus get ahead of us.Its broken down into 3 sections 4x4,rwd,fwd then there are 3 chalenges handling section ,1/4mile,drag strip i know are cars wouident enjoy handling through tight corners but drag strips wouid be a good battle if supras can do it i dont see why a zed cant.these are the cars that are the best? rs cosworth?rs turbo??? ford rs focus?? nisssan pulsar, skyline, vipers, scoobys, supras, evos, even a granada scorpio come of it iagree some of the cars above are worthy but can you spot the ones by personal opinion that are not.the only cars that won in there own right were skylines and evos, and if it wasent for a man called rocket ron in an r34skyline with over 600BHP and a top speed of 197mph then the skylines wouident of finished that high watch it if you havent

I've never had anyone ask what my car is (except when I was driving the 350Z last week). Maybe it's because mine is the subtle blue colour and not red with big spolier etc - guess it just slips under the RADAR ! ;) (never been nicked in it either)
