sorry mate, I meant be towed

my mates engine has blown, it will run but thats it so we was gonna get it running and get it towed

As far as I was aware as long as engine is running then oil pump for transmission? would still pump oil through.

I dont know if this is right though

Just found a manual where it states no more than 30mph for no more than 40 miles without disengaging prop shaft

Answered me own question.

:)

I would have thought that it would be better to tow a Z, if you didn't have access to a low loader that is, backwards and with only the front wheels on the ground!

J.A.T.

engine running means the oil is pumped round, I towed a Soarer all the way from Kent to Bucks like this and no probs. Put it in N, should be fine, I would do it anyway.

I believe that the gearbox oil is not pumped around in the same way when in N or P noticed this when i had a leak on my cooler, and it only leaked in 1,2 or D which means in N the oil isnt being pumped to the cooler and this will increase your chances of a gearbox blow up.

Ive got a reciept in my service history for a new autobox.....£1,400 in 1999 so god knows how much a new one is now!!!

If i were you id shop round the recovery firms if i were you, local ones, i got my zed recovered after the pipe split on the cooler for £70 for about a 40 mile trip, much better than a new box me thinks.

I broke down yesterday and insisted on a low loader, it's bad news towing a auto weather in drive or neutral, and it's very ilegal to pull a car backwards with the front road wheels on the floor!

Doubt you'd have much of a front spoiler left either!!! :nono: :(

I think it's OK if you place a "light board" over the front, showing a rear numberplate (of the towing vehicle, LOL :p ) and working red rear/stop lights, indicators etc.....

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Can anyone give me a definate answer to this?. I need to move my Zed from Maidstone to Lenham, where she will be laid up until I get back from Oz. She is a runner but I have no TAX, MOT or insurance. Any ideas welcome ;)

If the answer is no, does anyone know where I can get a low loader (with driver) to hire around the kent area?

Cheers

I wouldn't recommend it. To many things to worry about going wrong. I would recommend you just hire a £40 trailor for the day and tow it.

Thanks Cos!.

I will take a look into hiring a trailor. Considering the Zed is quite heavy, I would have though a fairly powerfull car would be needed to tow the trailor?.

You will need something the size of an Omega or 4x4.

Not sure if there is an Indespension in your area but you could check with the Stoke branch on 01782 336645.

good luck.

Thanks again. I have found somewhere to hire a trailer from, just gotta find a motor to tow it now ;)

What about a Transit?

I went through this when taking my zed up to duffer. I was told that towing with a transit would make the overall length of the van+trailer illegally long on a normal driving licence.

Had to fork out £200odd for an Isuzu Bighorn to pull the trailer which was fun, esp when Mr Chunk engaged the 4WD from the passenger seat at 30 on the M6 and conked it out :D

Also rang the RAC for a quote for a "legit" private tow - they wanted £600!!!

;wack:

Towed mine with a Ford Escort 1.3 ;) lol

You're joking? Fooking hell  Did you have to brake at all lol?

I guess you mean towed the zeditself, not the zed on a 0.5T trailer?

Smell of burning clutch, Mmmmm lurvly, lol :D

Wouldnt tow it myself. Dont think you can tow it backwards because of the difficulties in keeping the steering straight and steering lock. In the long run as said get a trailer etc...i got a box last year and payed £1800.

I wouldnt risk towing it in that case, as i think the towed car still has to be all legal, if not its got to be on a trailer.

Ive also heard that towing on a rope is now against the law, dunno if theres any truth in it, but i think you have to use a pole now.
