I have recently got my first Zed which I imported myself.

The importers took care of all my UK conversions which are all fine other than the way they have done the speedo.

They have installed a "little electronic box" as they put it to recalibrate the speedo to MPH. THye have also instead of putting stickers over the speedo, have just blacked out the "K" in the KMH so it reads "MH" instead.

This all seemed fine untill I noticed that the mileometer is now running up in miles instead of Kilometers. This all makes it a bit strange when trying to explain how many miles the car has done come the time when I sell it.

Anyone else had there speedo converted like this?

It's not just me then!!! I've just realised the same after bringing mine back from the garage today. I have no idea how I'm going to explain this when selling it!

Hi Justin,

Unfortunately, I don't have the answer to your question as I am looking to import a ZX myself as well. Which company did you go with to get your ZX imported?

Cheers

I just re-set my odometer to the correct number to represent the number of miles already covered.

You can also ask the garage doing the conversion to provide the reading at time of change, so when selling you can explain kms to xxxxx and miles from then on.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I do have some proof of how many Kilometers it had don in the form of the MOT certificate that was done before it could be driven on these roads.

Andy,

How hard is it to reset the odometer? Is there companies that do this and do they provide you with a proof of mileage certificate?

Cheers,

Justin

Justin, its about a 2 hour job (taking your time and being very carefull) to remove the instrument cluster, and reset the odometer. I just did mine last week (not to turn the odometer back but to fix a broken odometer, which was quite simple)

When I bought mine the previous owner must have changed the kph/mph conversion thing, as all the previous mot's were in kph (and a higher number) than the latest mot, which was in miles.

Cheers

John

The legit way obviously is to get the garage to certify the kilometres reading so you can explain the new mileage to any future owner as its not legal to "clock it" even though you are doing so to correct the mileage... HOWEVER it is a bit of a grey area and I doubt very much if anyone would throw the book at you if you prove the original Kilometres reading once converted. Ive done three now and I will do so on my fourth!

INCIDENTALLY guys have you ever wired in one of these black boxes wrong? Isnt it weird how it messes the power steering up!!

I would like to wind the clock back to the correct amount but would like to get it certified somewhere.

Anyone know someone who does this or can it be any garage? Surely if you got some local garage to do it then the certification would not carry as much weight as someone a bit more official undertaking the job.

Justin.

Is the HICAS effected with this type of converstion as it is speed sensitive? i.e. does everything happen earlier?

The variable power steering is affected, by way of it will stiffen for no apparent reason (bit like being on steroids not that id know ha ha)

WINDING THE CLOCK back is something many garages might not like to put their name to so Id find a nice small friendly garage possibly someone you know who might not be so fussed. Its not a hard job just an ethical one. Not sure where you are but I know of lots of import companies who do this, just be legit and not tempted by the cowboy question of.. "how much do you want me to knock off mate?"

Thanks Vijay,

I will have a read.

I just wish I could get the mileage certified somehow though.

I need to think of a few years down the line and I have to stand there expleining to someone how many miles it has done.

Justin

Just done two- follow angelfires instructions on dismantling odometer (remove stepping motor) and run back with something like a dremel with a tap washer (rubber) on a spindle. Run on 10th end- not on figures.

Perfectly legal to reset to miles equivalent of existing kilometres shown.

If your converter is purchased from Far East Services apparently does not interfere with Hicas etc and delimits Cruise as well as Top speed. They will issue a certificate of mileage when you fit it. Recommend take photo before & after reset also.

Talking to A & P who specialise in converting Jap imports, they say for SVA tests they have to retain the original speedo and tape over the K only- might explain why yours has this version. However one of the z's I've just done was an NA and the only face I was given was for the TT with the gauge cut out so I went the tape route also.

Incidently, if you use old face- use the thicker insulation tape that is usually slightly matt and first colour the K with a perm type felt tip- smashing job that doesnt show at all and the light wont shine through.

Thanks Dave,

Good idea about taking the pics.

I think in that case I will wind my clock back. It will be nice to have it all showing in miles anyway.
