Quick question -

How long do people generally leave their timers running for after a decent trip, say 20 miles?

I've had the turbo water cooling system disconnected so I leave it for about 3 minutes - is this enough?

depends...i usually take it easy just before i get to where i'm going and leave it for 2 mins

i set mine for 1min 30 but it takes me about a min to get in the garage but then again idont race down my street. (about 4 mins under 1500 revs)

the harder uv driven your car the more time u shouid set the timer for my buttons jammed on my hks t timer so its always set on 3min until i can be bothered to sort it.some kid at the petrol station said u shouidnt leave your car runnin when u leave it but as you know the engine cuts out when u engage gear so that shut him up!!but he wernt 2know :)

I'm new to this 300ZX malarki (sp?) so please excuse the question. I'm about to buy a manwell TT if I can find a decent one, but the ones i've driven so far seem to know when 1st is engaged, the revs rise slightly. Is this an illusion or do they have some sort or switch on the 'box?

Also, anyone know why i can't use the delete button in this 'Quick reply' box?

dont know why the revs sit up a bit when selecting 1st mine doesent but cars do odd things sometimes,as for quick reply just write under the last peace of txt by clicking below it!!

There is a sensor on the gear box that detects when the car is in neutral, mine is broken so i don't know about this rev rising thing :)

i don't know my timer just works it out for its self.if i cane it it will get up to about 2 mins., but this rapidly drops down to the minimum 10 seconds. most of the time the revs really are not that high to keep the turbo's spinning. bloody traffic.

Some people reckon it's better to take it easy for the last few miles so there's some oil pressure there - idling isn't the best for an engine full stop. For that reason I generally leave mine idling only for a minute once I actually get out of it. (I also turn the car around before parking it rather than when I get into it the next day.)

If I've been out for a really hard drive I'll do a couple of cooling circuits on a handy road which loops back on itself near the house. There's enforced cruising in either direction from my house in any case for a good couple of miles.

No need for your revs to be low in slow traffic - just drive in 2nd or even 1st instead of 3rd - you'll still be well out of the power and off boost. (None of you use 4th in a 30 I do hope...)

Both of the Zs I've had get noticably lumpier if you drive at full bore and then just sit in traffic, without any cooling in between - for which reason I do the last couple of motorway miles on the inside lane now.

Yeah mine sets itself when on auto too! Hows this done?? Pretty trick if u ask me!

Erm yeah I do actually why? 4th gear 30mph rpm=1500. Under certain circumstances I may even throw it in 5th at 30mph - bad boy me :D

1500 revs is practically idle. :D Doesn't feel right to me at all - like it's going to get away from you - and if you do need to slow down it's brakes or nothing, no engine braking!

I imagine once the Fidanza goes in I'll be even less keen on driving round at less than 2k!

Probably uses more fuel than 3rd as well, I can't imagine the engine is at all efficient at that speed given how far away from the start of torque you are.

Have a look at

(Yes, really, it's interesting!)

But I got bags of torque at 1500rpm :D TBH it will vary massively between cars and driving styles, but I don't like to hear the engine revving too high when I'm cruising, which, lets face it, is VERY rare ;) LOL

Yeah I can see where you're coming from. Only way is to test it though to find out for sure. I'll check out injector duty cycle in each gear @ 30mph and keep you informed. I do know for a fact however that at ~75mph you use nearly twice as much fuel than you do at 60mph ;) Thats roughly 3000rpm and 2500rpm respectively... Yes you are into the realms of high friction there too I know ;)

Yeah I can see where you're coming from.

Phew!

I'm quite interested to see those numbers, and also how much extra fuel you need to deal with a gradient at the bottom of a gear...

Even on our super-sleek cars, air and rolling resistance is the biggest factor at motorway speeds, so I don't think gear selection is important in the scheme of things there (which is just as well, because I use 3rd just for the hell of it on the motorway when I get to the end of bunched traffic :D)

The DD does 40mpg at a ton but a mighty 70-odd at 70! (Well, it did, I don't think the AFM is very well at the mo) Interestingly it's geared so a ton is just exactly where torque starts to drop off...
