after some of the recent HICAS removal threads I am wondering if im the only person who doesnt find it a problem!!

I like the way the car handles, maybe a little overweight, but no probs with the 4WS. its a UK car with stock suspension & 17" alloys.

who else likes/dislikes the 4WS on our cars.

is it just a import thing with speedo convertor problems or what??

? What's HICAS ?? - I know i's something to do with steering - is it a cross between normal steering and power steering, and is it found on all UK cars?

Thanks.

UK spec 1992

, never noticed anyproblems with it in the past, car responds well whilst steering and is very predicatble in what its about to do.

much prefer my car without it, felt like the car was going to slide, but usally drive a fwd most of the time.had it removed and more pedictable ,get it to slide when i feel like it get more feedback from the car

Cant say i've noticed it working or not on mine

But at least the damm light stays off now, that I've put some fluid in the pot :D

So can i vote for....... 'Not seen it work yet' :D

Mine's been disabled as IMHO it does have a detrimental effect on the handling . I don't get my kicks from hitting the highest top-speed possible, I'm not into building a straight-line monster. The most fun I get out of my car is when I'm throwing it round the twisties, and with the HICAS on, the back-end is just unerving, way too light and "floaty" when you're going into a corner at speed. That feeling is why it had to go! With it disabled the car feels much more under control.

Leigh.

I dont know how much the rear wheels actually turn, but it must be

hardly anything by the feel of mine, do u know paul? 5mm ?

I like the feel tho, a kind of controlled twitch when hammering thru a roundabout.

Very clever i think.

My import is fine, but I got the speedo situation sorted properly.

Bad, bad, bad!!

Maybe more noticable on my SWB, but I hated it. Speedo was converted properly by using UK clocks too.

Sorry but cannot agree here.

Hicas improves predictability for me. My car was without it for a while due to a speedo problem and I found the loss of the rear end and subsequent recovery to be a good deal less predictable.

Guess its all down to personal preference but I would not be without it. I`ve been a member of the advanced driving institute for over 10 years now and with all the RWD cars that I`ve owned I would say that the Zed with HICAS and traction control is by far the most easy to predict loss of and recover afterwards. Considering its mass, the Zed does recover very well with HICAS

Just my two penneth but the best thing about all Zed drivers is that we are different from the teeming masses of Audi TT and MGF sorts. Try it with and without, its easy enough to disconnect the HICAS system. We are all very different drivers after all

Never having driven a car the same spec as mine (without HICAS) I can;t really say which one I prefer, but I have no probelms what so ever with it on my 2+2TT however with the 2+0NA (which obviously doesn't have HICAS) this still handles just as well although sometimes you feel the back is slipping when it actually isn't.

At the end of the day, it gets dark.

When I got mine it had the HICAS removed so I cant say

On fast sweeping bends I just don't like the way it feels. A kind of 'false' feel to what the car is actually doing. Saying that haven't driven a Z without it so may dislike that more..........but I very much doubt it.

I like it. OK, so it can be a bit scary feeling like the back end is coming out at 100+ mph, but I'm certainly no professional driver and I reckon it's been doing some good now I'm adjusted to it. It's kinda like getting the best out of an auto-box... people who're used to manuals hate those f*ckin things cos they don't immediately know what they're supposed to do with them. HiCAS is definitely a plus IMHO. Henri Le Hirs thread about HiCAS (from many moons ago) is well worth a read.

wise words mate :D

trev - the zeds 4WS system moves very little compared to some other 4WS systems, only 1-2 degrees i believe?

thats why im wondering why some people find this detrimental??

It's just a feel thing. I like raw, 'pure' cars hence the fact I hated it.

Henri's thread was a good read, and raised some interesting points, but to me it's academic whether it actually does help or not under certain conditions - it wrecked my confidence in the car so I got shot of it and now I'm much happier.

Mine steers enough from the back with the cusco diff anyway!!

I'd recommend you disable it and try it then see which you like!

I ticked the NA option, but have driven a TT with HICAS and didnt like the way it handled fast sweepers. Also I span the car I was driving and, had it been HICAS free I think I could have recovered the slide which the spin started with but with the hicas trying to assist me in the correction I ended up overcorrecting and then trying to compensate for that and it all went the way of the pear. It is possible that had I been used to the way the HICAS operated I would have done it better, but I hadnt driven a car fitted with it before and it was an unwelcome addition. I know that I can slide my NA to a ridiculous point and still recover it. 2p

Leigh.

You've hit the nail on the head there Friday, I couldn't agree more.

One of the best mods I have ever did was to disable the HICAS, for me it just made the car twitchy and very floaty at the back end , I can now take the same corners that I used to take with the HICAS on much faster , more noticable on long sweeping bends than anything else , I will very shortly be ordering the The Hicas removal kit as JD has done , tbh I don't think you realise how well the Zed can handle until you have disabled the HICAS all imho of course.

A little info for you.

So how do you disable the hicas and is it a permanent thing ?.

I'm just thining if it's just a case or shorting the Hicas controller, I'll give it a shot and see what I thing, but as long as I can put it back again ;).

Stu, take the fluid level plug off the resevoir then short the plug that goes back to the loom. HICAS light should then be on and HICAS disabled.

Never noticed a problem on eithor of my UK cars.

Here's what Nissan had to say about it...

Initially I didn't like it but then I changed the wheels and new tyres and had the Hicas arms replaced and it was a new car again.

It seems if you got a UK 300ZXTT then HICAS doesn't appear to be a problem.. This is becuase all UK TT's we're lucky enough to be fitted with the HI Speed version of HICAS which apperently consisted of an optimized CPU instruction set and stiffer shocks and springs and this is why UK TT's look higher off the ground than there JAP Counterparts..

If Nissan didn't think HICAS was a good idea then they would have fitted it to the ZXTT, it's there for a reason... I've got a 92 UK TT and I gotta say it really does stick to the road, a lot of my mates who have no car knowledge what so ever all say how stable it is and hoe well it handles around round abouts and tight bends at speed without me even mentioning it to them..
