Help Guys...Knocking noise from my engine...

So, if the knocking/ticking sound does'ant go away - at all - ever - should I be afraid - very afraid?

What's it likely to be - goes ok!

Sounds like a VERY noisy tappet!!

Eric, thanks for replying - It's def from the top of the engine. Like a tappet but more of a knock!

Car was standing for three weeks, started lumpy, and I think thats when it started - not unusual - but it didant go away as I expected!

No smoke - good oil pressure. Have changed oil/filter since but no change!

sounds like a bad case of lifter tick..or a stuck lifter.

You could try a engine flush or add 1 cup of ATF to the oil in your engine.

The lumpy tickover and 3 week standing defo points to a sticking lifter.. an engine flush and refill with average oil then change again after 300 to 400 miles refill with good stuff should prevent a repeat.

Thank's guys, the difference between a tick and a knock is small to the ear but large to the pocket as I understand it! My heart is telling me it's a loud tick, but my head is saying knock!

With the engine at idle, I disconnected one coil at a time to see if the noise went away (if so - indicating to me that it would prob have been a rod bearing) it did not - phew!

I wil;l do the flush/oil change thing and take it easy! Am I going to break anything if I keep driving it though?
