Just a quickie, Im interested in the new bumper from Luke, but think a number plate might spoil the look. Whats the law regarding number plates, I wondered if a near horizontal one would be legal fitted in the marked section on the pic, bit like they used to have on the older classics, possibly stick on plate.

Featured Replies

Quite a few cars have a stick on plate, I think the law (apart from the Size/ gap/ font) says that it has to be clearly visible from the front (but not above !!)

ive had loads of different number plates im im 100% certain that theses stick on one are not legal, i also had one off those chase plates on the front (10'' long) and got done for that one too!

I think it all depends on the police force near where you live!!

Jim

The law on the Font, Shape and Size is the same all over the country, the law on where on the front it is, is open to debate you can place it anywhere as long as it it VERTICLE  So it can be read by all the :xxx: camera's around this land.

imo you should fit a small plate on a bracket from the top part

like so

but facing forwards not backwards like that one.

Thanks everyone, Ive just read that the stick on wants are illegal, possibly could go with something like Clarkeys suggestion, but have the plate on the bottom lip upwards.

Barry.

You can order a copy of the regulations from here:

https://www.tso.co.uk/bookshop/bookstore.asp?AF=A10075&FO=38383&Action=AddItem&ProductID=0110429257

........ or, if you get pulled just remember to quote Statutory Instrument 2002 No. 2687 - The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) (Amendment) Regulations 2002. :)

Basically, if it's a grey import the rules are

Character Height 64mm

Character Width 44mm

Character Stroke 10mm

Space between characters 10mm

Space above and below 13mm

Fuggles,

Those measurements you've quoted are the same as the link to the dvla site specs as posted by billynomates, and the wording clearly states,

Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:

The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval

AND

The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number plates

As you can see I've underlined the important part, and the answer is, this bumper CAN accomodate a standard size number plate, although it would look terrible  So if you used this as a defence, I think you could fall foul of the law. Personally I would also go for Clarkey's idea.

put the plate as high up and far back as you can. Any police car driving towards you will see there is a number plate because they are sitting down but any front facing cameras are mounted on poles or overbridges so they have less chance of getting a clear shot, no guarantees but you gotta do every little you can to help. The legal stuff doesn't bother me at all, I think some of you worry too much LOL ;)

Paul this may be the case for you mate, but i can tell you if you have an accident and you have not got the right sized or positioned plate  you are committing an offence  hence your insurance (WILL NOT) pay out mate......I am speaking from experiance mate not just becuase my Mrs is a copper :slap:

I am willing to get any advice off her for people who ask :D however its not the police you got to watch out for on these occasions, it's the Insurance :xxx:company's

Hmmmm wasn't aware of the "accomodate standard size" bit. I don't suppose many of the UK's finest are aware of this bit as well. So it may be worth trying anyway. Certainly a lot of Skylines run small front (and rear) plates.

Thanks for the info. though

as Sgt C says, id be more worried about the effect summat like

this can have on your insurance, than the police

at the end of the day a pull is a warning to get it sorted, or possibly a fine,

IF the insurance is involved, it could mean you lose any payout on your dream car, or a "get out" FOR them, and they don't need a lot of excuses to wriggle out of paying you

I'd be interested to hear the definitive version, but agree there are somne relaxations for imports, I got a special tiny rear plate made by the DVLA approved suippliers to fit my imported vehicle.

re-reading the relevant section, it doesn't seem to help with the number plate

problem, as the ECWVTA is

"From 17th June 2003 motorcycles, three-wheeled and light four-wheel vehicles must comply with European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA). Without such approval, vehicles cannot be registered for use in Great Britain. If a certificate of conformity to ECWVTA cannot be produced then the vehicle will be subject to a MSVA examination before first licence can be issued. If MSVA were not available the only route to registration in Britain would be full Type Approval which is an expensive and time consuming process and would effectively bring a halt to the registration of non-ECWVTA vehicles (e.g. custom / bespoke vehicles, amateur builds, non-EEA imports)."

so as i read it OUR cars or cars WE import must comply with the above, so

to that i would say the number plate must comply with uk laws

ah rite ok cheers for that mate its just ive got a scarab front to fit quite like clarkeys idea though

I believe that if you have an imported vehicle where the bodywork has a space for a 'less than full-sized uk plate' then you can fit a reduced size plate. This is what I did on my Import rear, but there is no problem fitting a full size front plate, so that's what I had to do.

i was gonna consider a square plate for the front when i get my bumper fitted but i like the one in clarkeys pic not sure though wot a full size plate will look like sett in the bumper like that
