Hello all,

I've done a search on here, but no-one seems to have reported the same symptoms that I'm experiencing, so I wonder if this is unusual:

I have a 1993 manual TT 2+2 and when I change gear all is fine except except when I put it into top. It crunches unless I do it very slowly :(

I'm no engineer – but changing down is not a problem, so I thought this can't be a synchro problem – can it?

The car was tuned from new by a Nissan main agent to 340bhp for a lady owner. I bought it from them when she traded it in at around 80,000 miles and the car has now done about 90,000. Have had the problem for a while now – doesn't seem to get worse, but it's really getting to me.

Anyone got any advice please?

It may be as simple as the clutch pedal needs adjusting.

There is a problem with 5th to 4th while going quite fast but never head about 4th to 5th.

Try double clutch. Press the clutch in to take it out of 4th. Release the clutch all the way, press it down again to get it into 5th and see if it crunches then. If it doesnt it means something. I know thats no help but I will find out what it usually means. I think its the syncomesh.

Also check that the mat is not under the clutch pedal as it may block it from going all the way down.

Thanks.

I don't think double de-clutching will help because, in the time that takes to do I can change up without crunching anyway.

With almost all cars you hardly need to depress the clutch to change up and the ZX is quite happy with my normal change-up in all other gears. Have already checked that pedal can be fully pressed down – still crunches if I'm too quick. And it's not that I'm changing up madly quick – unless I wait about 3 three seconds (!!!) before engaging top, it complains.

Hey eazy,

i had same problem on an alfa, 1st to 2nd and 4th to 5th,

like stu says try double declutch , it worked on the alfa and was synchromesh.

Has it done alot of motorway miles? maybe 5th is worn? is it noisy in 5th?

just redd your new post above, double declutching is slow and u wouldnt want to do it all the time no, but it will tell u if the synchro's knackered.

It can be knackered on that gear shift only and the rest will still be ok.

Probably mainly motorway.

Doesn't seem noisey to me.

Is that possible that downchange is no problem if it's the synchromesh? I'm hoping it's nothing that serious...

This is a documented problem guys. I can't remember where I read it but it is something that a bunch of enthusiasts tried to get Nissan to correct via a recall. They even pointed out where the fault lay and which parts needed changing.

If it's any conselation, mine does the same occasionally.

If I find the URL, I'll post it.

Very interesting – is it synchro then or something more obscure if yours only does it now and then?

Would be grateful for the link. Cheers.

  • Author

Thanks - looked at the link, but that is about changing down from 5th to 4th and I don't have any problems there.

That's what I don't understand – why only on the upchange to 5th? Otherwise everything is fine.

Confused.... :(

I think its just the 4th to 5th synchro mate, but im no engineer either!

Interesting to see its had one lady owner tho, i could imagine her changing upto 5th at every unnecessary opportunity! Shes w*nked it out!

:xxx: :xxx: :xxx:

Are there no girls on this forum who will now tear you limb from limb? :p

If it is the synchro, how many hours will a Nissan dealer reckon for doing the job and is there anything else that should be done while they are at it?

Or has anyone else got any ideas?

LOL i was only jokin girls  eazy now,

come back tomorro mate , im sure u'll get some more suggestions from

the more techie among us. :duffer:

yup, sounds like the 5th gear synchro, gearbox out & strip down job im afraid.

In that case, I think I'll learn to live with it – at least for the time being – as for me the costs outweigh the disadvantages of living with this problem.

Thanks for your advice guys. :)

It will be worth filling it with redline MT90, it has got rid of some of these problems entirely. Myself I would rather pay £30 and change the G/box oil than the money for a box rebuild!

That sounds like a worthwhile invesrtment.

A quick search shows me that it is supplied in US quarts (0.946 litre) for £ 12.57 inc for online ordering from MTMOTORSPORT.

Can anyone tell me, do I need two quarts or three for the manual box?

I think you need three bottles do a search and find out?

Should cost you about £39 for the oil and £20 membership for all the money we have saved you with this advice :)

:p If it works... :p

Is Paypal the only option? I don't like internet transactions... where can I mail a cheque?

Anyone know offhand if the gear box holds three US quarts/litres or two?

Thanks :)

Ahh... I've had a browse and found that the club treasurer is in the middle of moving house and payment by cheque is not advised at the moment.

I'll keep an eye on that. Thanks again for the advice all.

three

If you get it all out and make sure the oil cooler and hoses are filled, you'll need four. I've just done it and it took three and a bit.

Both mine have been fussy about 5th gear. As the man says Redline MT90 is apparently the way forward. I'll be trying it myself soon. ;)

4th/5th are under more stress than the other gears (high road speed, and overdrive ratio). The problem was that the alloy chosen for the cones was too soft for the job and therefore they wear prematurely. Loads of Z's with this problem.

It's a feature, it teaches you not to rely on synchromesh. I find a slow smooth 4th-5th is OK and doesn't actually cost much time, because a fast change just means the clutch takes longer to settle down anyway!
