Got my GReddy boost controller so am now moving onto the ecu and chip.

How much better are custom chips as apposed to the "off the shelf" variety?

How have people got on with JWT?

Does anyone know how much SE charge for a custom mapped chip?

There must be a definitive route to take, considered the best?

Cheers.

SE charge £500 for a custom map.

I never really got on with my JWT chip, but others have had good results with them......

Talk to John Dixon, thats who Scoops and (I think) Mr Shrimp got theirs from.

Custom chips are always better because they are done on the road or on the dyno if availiable. JWT chips are nice and you can put an aftermarket a/f regulator and a do a better fine tunning.

Ready to go chips are a llitle restricted and are differrent from car to car. Let's say the basic chip is for excaust, airfilter and for raising boost. From airfilter to airfilter and from excaust to excaust the hp gain is different.

If you have spent the money on the mods then it is probably worth getting a custom chip made to get the maximum safe performance out of them, Thor will map a chip and I think he said something about 4 hours labour involved? I don't believe it is wise to map around problems though

When I up my boost to 12.5 psi I plan on getting an off the shelf chip however.

James,

I hope this is of help to you,

90p should buy you a nice bag of chips, or if its homechips you prefer, then you can either chip your own from potatoes, or my presonal preferance, is to go to ASDA and buy some frozen ones.

Then you've got the choice of either straight cut or crinkle cut ones and oven or frying.......................... the choice is endless really.

Then of course you've got the choice as to what to put on them, salt, vinager, ketchup, gravy, mustard, etc,etc

Just thought I'd throw that bit of advice in there for you, anything to help m8 ;)

:slap: Cheers mate! LOL.

I think remapping of an existing chip, I wasn't really paying attention, :) they will be traders soon though,

The chip itself does not give you a very large power increase, what it gives you is the ability to raise the boost safely. All the off the shelf chips do is give you a richer (i.e. safer) fuel map and a modified ignition timing map. They also usually up the rev limiter by a couple of hundred revs.

The chip also contains an alternate fuel and timing map that are used when the ECU detects detonation or if the car is in safety boost for any other reason (e.g. code 34 faulty det sensor). Some companies (JWT for example) make these maps identical to the full maps. Since after installing a boost controller you will no longer have safety boost and if the safety maps are the same as the full ones you are going to watch for detonation very carefully. Some chips (like the so called Devin chip from japan) use a safety timing map of 15 degrees for every location in the timing map. The car will run horribly but at least won't blow up (there is some debate about running a lot of boost with very retarded timing however).

So it boils down to choosing your poison I guess. But I honestly don't think there is a huge difference in performance between the various chips unless they have been specifically tuned for your car. Safety may be a different matter.

For those of you with computers there are some free tools for looking at these maps and there are plenty of examples of different maps available to look at or even to burn into chips yourself if you have the necessary skills.

All IMHO of course and when are you giving the rugby world cup back?

We haven't had it for a while, I guess it's in good hands.

We haven't had it for a while, I guess it's in good hands.

And it'll be in our good hands for many a year to come too! At least you can lay claim to owning it first though.

Hi James300,I would highly recommend you to call John Dickson to discus your required chip.He knows his stuff.Did mine resently for my 555 injector and bigger intercooler upgrade, car runs like a dream.

James, just found this page when Googling...

http://www.ttzd.com/tech/ecu/ecu.html

The first half of the page is about why JWT are considered best by many. I'm looking into all this meself too...
