A long time before joining this forum and hearing people's aversions to the superchips ECU, I had the following done to my Z.

Superchips ECU and "de-catted" exhaust centre sections.

Turbo technics "stage 1" hybrids.

HKS exhaust rear sections.

Boost raised to about 15psi.

After hearing discussion about different ECUs, is it worth me changing mine for something different? What exactly are the problems with the superchips one?

I do keep dropping into safety boost every now and again and I'm sure I can hear occasional detonation even when running Super Unleaded. I can definately hear detonation on normal unleaded. I wouldn't have thought the ECU could contribute to this but any opinions, as always, are more than welcome.

ok scene from mission impossible 2!!

pull chip out car and throw in air and watch it self implode.

they are being sued by nissan i think (dontknwo where i heard that)

Hi Mike

I was going to go for a superchip (before I had heard of JTW etc. )but was advised to go for a uni-chip because it had more to offer. I think the super chip is a set program and can not be custom mapped like the uni-chip that I went for. My uni-chip seems to be fine since having it install over 12 months ago. I am sure the other guys have views and opinions as to what chip upgrade is best. Listen to what they say and make up your own mind!!. If you car is detonating you need to sort it out soon M8.

Super chips versus JWT Ecuse the translation my german is not that good

Chip Tuning Nissan 300ZX

NEWS (October 2000): Superchip makes no more chips for 3000GT

(predicate of a technician, that with superchip operates!)

Tja... gave evenly too many damage to the engine. But if a chip does not make anything...

which is to then occur also differently. With the Z32 is not it different.

Who has rosa eyeglasses regarding the chip of the company Superchip, should not read on. I drove first the superchip

and the result is a damage to the engine (Kolbenfresser, 5.Zylinder). Clearly, which said now some, it rested against the false oil or

, but today I drive nothing different one than at that time to other things also and there I in 3 years meanwhile enough experienced and read, do not come me such a chip of the label superchip any longer into the auto. And I am not the only one, the problems with the superchip had, only the others have a problem to admit it. So the false people is even.

Klaro gives it to exceptions, e.g. our doctor Z from Koblenz, there are humans, who have wolf chip of problems with the Jim with security also. Our doctor Z has now over 200tkm on the Tacho and of it some with the superchip was driven.

It had beforehand a Jim wolf in it, is however the opinion, the superchip has more steam and the car became with the Jim wolf

a little too fat drive. I imagine however, rather a little too fat and but e.g. a perfect gemischverhaeltnis. But more to it later...

Strictly speaking only the know-how has to tunen a Z32: That would be Jim wolf .

Jim wolf (also for the Nissan Rennabteilung operates!) the only one is in the Nissan world, which received the SOURCE code from Nissan for the chip. All different have the original chip chop/copied... (however one that to call likes!). So a chip to modify no light thing is and therefore earns many companies cash to copy the original chip easily to remove the VMax barrier or raise the number of revolutions. At the mixture, characteristic diagram etc. is not made anything, because the load printing, which is raised, completes the remainder. Easily earned cash.

First a few data, then the Fakt's:

The JW chip increases the performance in connection with the provided Boost jets up to 350 HP. The torque is increased " clearly ". This is done via a modified ignition in partial load -, and in the full voll-Lastbereich. The optimal values were determined on a performance test stand. Suitably the mixture was optimized, as well as start of injection and - mixed. Deweiteren is increased the load printing, which is situated with the original twin turbo at 0.65 bar, to 0.93 (+ / - 0,05) bar. This enables a clearly better acceleration within the high-speed area. An increase of the TopSpeed over + 20 km/h in relation to indicated the maximum speed can be also obtained thereby. Likewise the passage ability is substantially improved. Consumptionconsumption consumption does not rise, several drivers reported to me, which the car uses even fewer.

The JW chip:

- optimized characteristic diagram!!

- optimal start of injection, and quantity

- increase in output in connection with the Boost jets approx. 50 - 65 HP

- clear increase of the torque!

- maximum speed delimitation removes.

- increase of the TopSpeed over approx. + 20 km/h to series

The chip costs approx. 570 USD, the installation of the control unit (ECU) with the Boost jets can within 1 hour be made.

Here think times a few points to:

Why does superchip for each auto have a chip?

Tja, a chip to copy can everyone. For some sports car superchip has again from the product supply rausgenommen, because too many engines went broken. I can quite reconstruct, because:

Some people, e.g. our Sir Le Hir from Switzerland has before long time times the superchip apart taken and has determined, which this superchip makes strictly speaking for nothing. This Sir Le Hir (also Henri called, last year in Holland participated and also before 3 years in the Eifel on one our meetings!) is an absolute z-technician. It knows some Ami's pers. and also Jim wolf knows it pers. and even the Ami's asks Henri for advice (twinturbo.net in), if they continue to know no longer. This Henri selected and determined thus the chip, which the chip makes for absolutely nothing, at least nothing that concerns performance. The performance comes to 95% only with the load pressure, which is raised with the Z32 on approx. 0.93-0.98bar. (original approx. 0.62-0.65bar). The difference to the Jim wolf chip is that, which also something is made at the mixture and many other things. And the superchip does not do exactly. Jim wolf wrote and optimized the complete contents of (SOURCE code) newly. It may be, which it lost thereby few steam in the comparison around superchip, however tunes whole chemistry (tuning) and the car is not clean getuned and one must a fear have, which the engine one flies around the ears.

Amusing way (and that is really a stupid coincidence finds I!) many broken engines had a superchip in it. Really an amusing coincidence.

In the states each third Z32 has a chip in it. To 99% the Ami's drives to the Jim wolf chip. Why? And the Jim wolf chip costs more than the superchip. Why does the Ami's buy then nevertheless the Jim wolf chip? Why does the really fast Z32 in the states have always a Jim wolf chip in it? Why does the Ami's have CLEAR of fewer damage to the engine than we in Germany, although the Ami's has clearly more getunte Z's certified?

Who would not like to believe this article, times inquire info. should umschauen itself ' at the absolute reference page www.twinturbo.net or. There daily at least approx. 400 new messages come purely, where it concerns only the 300ZX. There is no comparable page in Germany, where as much know-how is to be found, what the 300ZX concerns.

The predicates, which are made here over the superchip, were acknowledged e.g. by the company Japsport with a meeting. Everyone well or cleanly getunte Z has a JW chip in it. The Nissan autohouse Ficke e.g. inserts also only Jim wolf Chip's, when desired in addition, the superchip. (one can force none to its luck and who has too much cash, that is also no matter to that, like for a long time the engine holds)

Except the chip of Jim wolf gives it also still which of lightning, SKN, Dinan, HKS, AutoThority, June, g-Force and determine also still which, which I do not know. Many of these chips are simply only cheap copies of the superchip, thus the in any case fingers of leave. I could introduce myself well, lightning and June its own chip to have, thus nothing copy, had however unfortunately further Info's of those.

The sad end of the song is thus, which unfortunately is simple it in Deutchland mode, chips from the USA to buy England or Japan and then a label of the own company draufzukleben. It is mostly of the company SuperChip, because evenly the most favorable. Here again the mental impetus, why superchip for almost each auto has a chip.

Thus eyes on with the chip purchase. If one got then one, where e.g. only terminal velocity delimitation became to rausgenommen and one for it 2000 DM paid, then that is already very annoying. Particularly since one can receive its engine with security for much fewer cash broken. Simply, already flies the load printing on 1 bar and Z in it-lets the original chip.

In no case a good chip (e.g. Jim wolf) may cost more than 1600 DM.

Everything else is pure usury. The JW costs bail pay, which it gets back naturally later for the moment in the exchange approx. 570 USD, who can send its control unit (ECU) not first into the states, must 500 USD.

I would see also gladly times the stupid faces, if drivers the series chip would insert the superchip again (load printing to leave in such a way as he is!) and the car runs exactly the same as with the " superchip "..; -)

To check one can e.g. very well with a MDM the Techtom instrument and the serial number of the chip. Each chip does not have a number and most to modify this number. My chip announces as seriennummer POP60. (again thanks at Henri and Jim!)

**time-out** so, and in end still another a few nice Mails from the tt.net , which it real good read should. Does not believe please the articles on other German " like gladly " z-pages, where the superchip is defined as " " the chip. Read www.twinturbo.net...

Loosely gehts; -)

Status 10/2000:

Question: i have the superchip in valley LED and would like to know if the JWT ECU is more better or is it the same?

Answer: The majority opinion here (and it is a STRONG one!) is the superchip ECU that is NOT worth the EPROM it's written on. The JWT is the one to go with. i thought and understood that JWT had itx27s own software and you would have to transmits in your ECU and then GET the modified ECU from them. They thus DO core of exchanges (you buy the ECU from them and pay a core load -- transmit your stick ECU bake and they refund the core) but ix27ve lakes that the JWT chip is being pay separately as the superchip. is the same chip it with same software w/diffetent more sticker?? NOT RK ALL THE SAME SOFTWARE. Superchips is a stick chip just with the rev limiter and speed more limiter removed. JWT has remapped the fuel maps, timing map, etc.. Much more comprehensive than the superchips.

now the older...

Jim wolf and Clark Steppler worked with Nissan to develop the special chips for the 300ZX racing program. *** TRANSLATION ENDS HERE ***Nissan has granted them permission to use much of the stock 300ZX code in their power chips. No other chip maker has this permission, so you're stuck with JWT if you want your car to do what his chips do. If not, then buy a Superchip or AutoThority's chip. Because the stock code is not modified, you'll get different performance. Whether you think they charge too much is not relevant. They can charge whatever they want to. You want to play - you pay. Nissan did do a good job of programming the chip. However, what Superchips did is fraud and theft, pure and simple. They took Nissan code and found where the speed limiter is located and jumped around that code. Since Nissan owns the copyright on that code Superchips is guilty of theft. Since Superchips claims that their ECU mod will increase horsepower, they are guilty of fraud. If I took Microsoft Windows and changed it to Winders, I would have done the same thing Superchips did. Microsoft would sue me into the next millenium.

Jim Wolf Technology wrote new code for the Nissan ECU to increase performance AND reliability and obtained permission from Nissan to use the portion of Nissan code that remained unchanged. This is the correct way to do it.

Superchips method does NOTHING to compensate for the fuel and timing changes needed when additional boost is applied to the engine. This could easily lead to detonation which will cause you to buy a new US$11,000 engine.

Do a search here, on the web, or on usenet, and you'll find hundreds of superchips horror stories. a while back, they were simply putting "superchips" stickers on the stock ecu WITHOUT modification.

A few people have done dumps of stock ecus versus superchips ecus and found two common "versions" of the chip:

1) the stock and superchips ecus were exactly the same.

2) only the rev limiter was removed.

Would you trust your car to a company with this reputation?

Jim Wolf is the ONLY tuner that has worked extensively with Nissan to develop more high performance from the engine in all aspects of its operation. He has permission from Nissan to modify their copyrighted programs: Dinan doesn't, Superchips doesn't (and don't anyway) and AutoThority doesn't.

There are probably three or four companies that market chip or ECU upgrades to the 300ZX TT. And there are two types of upgrades: the chip tuners like AutoThority, Dinan and Superchips and Jim Wolf. The tuners change the data maps that the ECU uses when it makes its decisions on fuel/air mixture, ignition timing and some other functions. They also change the rev limiter, which Nissan has set conservatively, and some eliminate the top speed governor. When they do this, you may experience different engine characteristics as well: trouble starting when cold or hot, or a rough idle, poor fuel economy, etc. Or you may not get what you think you've paid for: Superchips changes just one thing: they eliminate the rev limiter.

Jim Wolf has been involved in modifying Nissan's ECU's for their racing program and has an agreement with Nissan to modify the computer code in the ECU - something the chip tuners can't do. He has the ability to change the programming of every performance-related parameter, so he can adjust the ECU to the car you're driving: your car runs as if it were stock, but takes full advantage of the goodies you've added on. And when you upgrade beyond where you are, such as bigger turbos, bigger injectors or NOS, Jim Wolf can make you an upgraded chip that will recognize those upgrades and still maintain your driveability and engine

reliability.

Jim Wolf's ECU's are sold directly by Jim Wolf Technology and also by Stillen. You can get Jim Wolf ECU's from other sources as well, such as SGP and Primespeed. I'm not sure where NOPI gets their upgrades.

I have taken a VERY close look at several versions of code from Nissan, JWT, Dinan, and Superchips for the 90+ 300ZX (turbo and NA). Nissan has made trivial changes in the code from 90 - 94 with only minor differences between models to support the associated hardware. JWT has made minor changes to the "housekeeping" sections of the Nissan code and major changes to the fuel and timing maps. They even added additional code to check for unusual conditions in the operation of the engine.

Superchips merely changed one byte of code to jump around the speed limiter code. I have called this fraud and stand by my statement.

Dinan changed the fuel and timing maps to compensate for the additional boost, but did not make the more extensive changes JWT did.

Dinan is one of the chip makers that uses a mapping approach to altering the performance characteristics of our cars. They change the section of the program where the values for air/fuel, spark advance and rev limits are stored by the program, but they don't change the computer code that uses these values, like Jim Wolf does. Dinan cars have been reported to run rich because of these changes. I've heard that there may be at least one case of a blown TT motor that was running a Dinan chip and was running rich, although I've not personally seen any documentation on it. Remapping the values can be dangerous because it can introduce more fuel to the cylinder at a time when the valves aren't ready for it, which could lead to detonation or at least poor gas mileage and less, not more, power.

It's back to 'what do you want to pay for?' Jim Wolf had and still has heavy involvement in racing engines. He worked with Nissan to develop the ECU for the racing engine, and he rewrote sections of its code to do different things with valve timing, air/fuel mix, spark advance and some other functions including turbo wastegate operations. He has Nissan's permission to sell ECU's with altered program code. Dinan, AutoThority and Superchips don't modify the code and only modify the data maps. In the case of Superchips, they alter only the rev limiter. You get more peace of mind with a JWT ECU, because the program has been redesigned to get more performance out of your engine, rather than just having some changes to the mixture and spark curve made to the data.

- Rev. Limiter Raised 200 RPM

- Cam Timing control optimized

- Eliminates Top Speed Limiter at Computer Level

- Throttle Response Code Optimized

- Control Maps "Resized" for control at high RPM and power

- Air/Fuel Ratios corrected for higher power

- levels Ignition Timing corrected for optimum torque and cylinder temperature

Thanks for your interest in JWT products. Here is a list of what we have

for the 1990+ 300ZX Twin Turbo.

ECU upgrade $570 on an exchange basis (1990-95 at this time only) adds an

additional 60 HP. Turnaround time is typically 2-3 business days. We have

a core exchange option (500 USD). Call us for details. The ECU for the 1996 model is still in development and might be available sometime next year. Check back at that time for those with 1996 models.

Pop-Charger air intake system $159 (1990+, flows well enough for up to 500

HP set-ups) adds an additional 10-18 HP.

Dual Pop-Charger upgrade $599 when ordered with ECU upgrade (best for 450 HP+ systems, decreases turbo lag, flows well enough to support up 1000 HP if anyone ever got near that.) Note that retuning of the ECU is necessary if you already have a JWT ECU. (not available for 1996 at this time)

The 3 piece package called our 396 HP kit (ECU, Pop-Charger and stainless

exhaust system,) is $1495 for this entire package when purchased as a set.

The exhaust only fits the 2 seater.

Intercooler upgrade $1000 adds about 24 more horsepower when used with the 3 piece package above.

Greddy Profec "B" boost controller $420

555 Injectors $225 each For 1990-95 models only.

Z32 Race cams $1100 for the set of 4, no core required. Must use the HD

valve springs. These cams work well with our race heads. Not available

for the 1996 at this time.

Cam sprocket adapters $34 (must use on 90-93 when using the cams above.)

HD valve springs $12 each (24 required, these are used with the cams above.)

Race Cylinder Heads $3600 on an exchange basis. These heads have

multi-angle race valve job, porting of the intake and exhaust ports, and

match porting of the lower intake manifold and turbo manifolds. They come

with our race cams and heavy duty valve springs. All you need to do is add

new hydraulic lifters or use your originals if they are ok. (Not available

for the 1996 model at this time.)

NOS Control module $450 (this unit gets installed inside a JWT upgraded

ECU) This when upgrade used along with our NOS hardware kit is a NOS spool up program. The NOS will shut off at about 10 PSI with stock turbos and 14-15 PSI with upgraded turbos. NOS Hardware kit $595 (NOS bottle, bracket, braided hose, spray nozzle, solenoid, relay, wiring and plumbing, instructions.)

Aluminum flywheel $525 (much lighter than stock for quicker acceleration)

JWT Performance clutch $485 (Includes pressure plate and disc)

T/O bearing and pilot bearing is $20 more with clutch above.

JWT Stainless Exhaust System is a 2.5" mandrel bent system that is full

stainless. $950 for the entire system. This system retains high flow

resonators for better sound control and also retains the H-pipe crossover

tube. The rear tips are 3.5" x 4.5" oval and fit the cut out nicely. The

back of the muffler can is painted black for a clean look. This system

only fits the 2 seater and it works best with the ECU upgrade and JWT

Pop-Charger. About 18 HP is gained with this exhaust system. This system

doesn't work on a 2+2 model.

Turbo Upgrades (all require the 555 injectors and retuned ECU and a boost

controller):

Sport 500 $2395 pair, on an exchange basis, allows up to slightly over 500

HP potential. These are our most popular turbo upgrades and they are a

direct bolt on. We recommend intercooler upgrade, Pop-Charger and exhaust system upgrades with these turbos.

Sport 600 $2995 pair, on an exchange basis, allows up to 600 HP potential.

Race cams and head porting recommended to reach the highest output level.

Sport 650 $3995 pair, these are sold outright and require ALL the upgrade

modifications to be able to use to their potential which is about 650 HP.

Forged Pistons $180 each. These are Hi-Silicon alloy and lower compression to 8:1. They come in three sizes (87.00mm, 87.25mm, 87.50mm) and are recommended for high HP build-ups. These pistons require less clearance than most forged pistons and have an offset wrist pin for much less piston rattle than conventional forged pistons.

Brake conversion to Skyline GTR front brakes $1050, includes larger

diameter, thicker, cross-drilled rotors and 2 calipers that bolt in place

of the stock units. Uses your factory Nissan pads and hardware for a

significant improvement in brake fade resistance and braking abilities.

Due to the large amount of e-mail we get, we ask that you call us during

our business hours for any additional questions.

Good post Warren, very interesting info. Your fingers must be burning after writting all that M8.

Go on twinturbo.net, and enter 2 words in the search...

SUPERCHIPS FRAUD

You'll see....it's interesting..

And BTW, supershit changes ONE BYTE in the stock Nissan Eprom..they DO rmove the speed limiter...and that's ALL

I saw more than 10 dead Z with SuperSHit stuff inside....

Get rid of it (and if you want, I can explain you why their "encryption" is DAMM DANGEROUS for the car)

Ohhh, and BTW...it's IMPOSSIBLE to make a "CHIP" for a Mitsubishi 3000 GT, as the code is embedded in the CPU
