I've got a slight concern over part of my PCV system. Can some people give me a hand on this by checking something on their Zeds for me.

Where the metal pipes leave the rocker cover to go to the air intakes, mine have some play in them on both sides. In fact the left hand one (looking at the front of the engine) has more play in it than the right. To investigate further is going to involve me taking the covers off and buying more gaskets to put them back on again. But if there is a problem, I need to do it now while the plenum's off.

So... could any helpful people try "wiggling" these pipes on their Zeds to see if theirs have any play in them as well. Try pulling them away from the rocker cover and pusing them back towards it. Then try any up and down play. My left one moves in and out about 2mm. The right one just moves up and down slightly.

I've attached pictures so you know which bits I'm talking about.

Hiya Mike,

There shouldn't be any play in these pipes. However, fixing them shouldn't be too much of a pain. I'd use epoxy for the joint with the aluminium cam covers.

This sounds like the sort of easy fix I like! Does anyone know how these are attached inside and, therefore, how they could have become lose?

If no-one can give me a good reason why the epoxy job won't do the trick, that's the route I'll be taking tomorrow I think.

Cheers mate.

They're press fitted into the ally.

I was going to suggest silcone sealant, which will stop any air leaking from around the edge. But I'm sure you'll want something a little more solid. There's no danger of the pipe coming out completely, since the rubber hose at the bottom will hold it in place. (The rubber might well have have gone rock solid, after years of heat and oil vapor inside).

If you wanted to change the camcovers for new ones / 2nd hand ones, it's a plenum off job, and you'll need two new intake camcover seals and a new plenum gasket. However taking the plenum off, may mean having to buy other various hoses, if they've hardened.

Cheers mate. The plenum's already off for other work. The problem I've got is I didn't order gaskets for this stuff from Courtesy when I got everything else. Nissan wanted £62 for each of the lower intake manifold to cylinder head gaskets when I enquired recently, so I was kind of bricking it that the rocker cover gaskets may be similarly priced!

Anyway, if I take off the rocker covers, it still sounds like replace rather than repair, which is going to add up to something even bigger. So I'm thinking it's probably best all round to try and repair them in situ.

Hello Mate,

They are the breather pipes that return internal engine fumes to the engine intake so they are not returned to atmosphere!

I suggest you use JB weld available from Halfords, it is like araldite but formulated for metal and high temp use, make sure you get a good seal around the joints though!

Mike many guys in Aussie land actually remove these pipes altogether as they are most common reason as to oil residue in the intake pipes, other than that, yep the ole araldite will fix em firm.

cheers

eerrmmmmmm, dunno about that smithy, the construction of an oil breather system for the Zed is a subject of much controversy and shutting them of could be a source of potential problems!

Not saying you are wrong, would just like to know more about it, before doing it! (said the deviant :slap: )

No probs mate, will search it later, one of the infamous Blipmans recomendations.

In reality though as they don't connect to the pcv valves i see no reason why not, on many many other models of cars removing the same pipes and just banging a small pipercross filter one works well. even done it meself, though not on me Zed, lol

I've got two new intake camcover seals here if you find a spare tenner in your wallet. (Like these: http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CP&Product_Code=13270-00001)
