in 5th gear under WOT at around 4000rpm my car will occasionally drop about 300rpm to around the 3700 mark and acceleration will start to pick up once more, surely my clutch isn't slipping? it seems fine in other gears, it is really confusing me now as to what could be causing it. You can actually hear the engine note change so its not a dodgy tach.

Hey mike,

like u said cant be slipping clutch, revs would pick up not drop.

Ive neva driven a manual Z , do they have a lock up or some sorta overdrive in 5th gear over certain revs?

Its something to do with the engine not gear box. Sounds like what my car was doing just before the PTU failed.

Sounds exactly like clutch mate. It slips when in the torquier part of the engine range then stops slipping when it reaches higher revs. This is the drop in revs you see. I presume from your description that the car doesn't slow down when the engine revs drop?

no overdrive on manual

no real slow down, it could be a slipping clutch I guess it is about where my torque peaks, clutch seems fine in lower gears though but I am never usually on WOT :)

Yup I'm with my namesake on this ;) Make sure that rear main seal aint leakin' ;)

wouldnt a slipping clutch slip loads tho?

i mean if you floored it in 4th at say 30mph.

Your revs would rise sharply without any real acceleration if your clutch was slipping - exactly whats happening to me at the moment :(

It is almost as though they rise quickly and then drop, only in that range, never really in any other gear.

Stick it in 5th at 30mph mate and floor it. What happens ? Lots of revs and now movement = clutch slipping. normal revs but it still aint going nowhere = nothing wrong with the clutch.

You won't get anywhere near enough boost doing that. You need 3000rpm at least in fifth to give it a good work out.

Get maximum boost in fifth and let go of the throttle. The revs shouldn't suddenly drop but should gradually fall with the speed of the car. If they suddenly drop, it's the clutch and nothing else.

When these clutches first start to go, very often you don't get the mad rise in revs without going anywhere. The initial gradual slip gives exactly the problem you're describing.

This problem is your clutch mate. It will probably last for a fair bit longer. But when it starts to go properly, you'll really know about it then.

Its no biggy really, was planning on a new clutch and flywheel from smithy in the summer, ill do the diags you guys have suggested just to confirm it is that and nothing else :)

WOT at 4000 revs in 5th? It's probably the start of time dilation effects!

I'm a bit confused about how this can be a slipping clutch still boys... someone explain? Surely if you're on WOT then a slip will always lead to a RISE in revs cos the engine will suddenly not have anything stopping it revving to the redline?

Oh no wait I just sussed it... it slips, the engine speed goes up but the car slows down a bit and the clutch gets it all together again and then engine speed has to drop to meet road speed having effectively coasted for a bit.

But wouldn't you feel it lurch too? I would have thought the car would slow down pretty quick at that speed?

(I'm now thinking perhaps the clutch on the daily driver is going... I had thought it was a dirty AFM. Hmmm.)
