Anyone care to illuminate me as to the symptoms this would produce?

i.e erratic running, detonation, flat spots, inability to get the car running right for more than 2 minutes at a time

Ho hum.

Erm, 300zx don't have a map sensor.....

I was slightly confused. It would have been the first time I heard that too.

I just wish it did - that way tuning the ****er wouldn't be so damned difficult...

Adam, are you talking about the fpr(fuel pressure regulator)???

No small black plastic box next to the fuel pressure regulator........

All TT Z's have a MAP sensor used for the dash boostgauge and '95+ Z's do have a MAP (and MAF) sensor used by the ECU

The black box you mean is the MAP sensor for the dash boostgauge, not used by the ECU.

If it's leaking or not connected you will have false/no readings from the boostgauge, it shouldn't affect the running of the engine

Adam, I disconnected mine ages ago and not had any problems. (apart from dead stock boost gauge obviously!).

Also helps tidy that corner up a bit ;)

can you explain how having a boost leak wont effect the engine running?

True

Might not matter if the MAP itself is dead but if the pipe to it is split you have a leak in metered air which will produce all of AdamR's list, plus possibly weird noises under boost and rough idle.
