converting reverse lamps to fogs

Has anyone converted two of the reverse lamps to fogs ?

If so has anyone got any pics / instructions. Looks as though the only difficulty is modding the bulb holder.

Hey Andy

Yep i've done it.

There is only one light in each of the reverse lights.

Your best bet is to take the internal reflector out of a fog light and make it fit with a red bulb into the top light of one of the reverse lights.

Then fit an additional switch to one of the dash switches probably the right would be best.I'll get you a picture in the new year.

Don't forget to put in a fuse in line otherwise if there's a problem you'll melt the wire.

Not heard of anyone doing that, but I do know of people who have jap specs that have put a relay in place so that when the fogs are turned on, one of the sides lights are used, and even if the brakes are pressed, the outer light comes on.

Although, when the fogs are off, the normal side lights work as normal.

Don't know if anyone has written a tech doc for this before but this is something that I will be looking to do when I have my respray as I will be looking to put on a J-spec rear bumper to make the back end smoother.

Nothing better than a smooth back end! ;)

Hi Andy

I've seen it done by importers. The reverse lights are bright enough, so you may not need the reflector. Use a red bulb or remove the inner lens cover and paint it red using tail-light tint spray (about £10 from Halfords).

Get a wiring kit which has a switch and relay (it must only come on with dipped headlights), snip of the wire to the reverse lamp and connect the new wiring to the wire in the light cluster.

If you have one of those dangly lights bolted on, most of the wiring is done. Just snip the wire to the reverse light, run the wire from the bolt-on crap thing into the boot and connect it to the wire to the light you have just cut. Dead easy!

Oh make sure you do it to the right hand side:D

Thanks all for your input.

Went the way of the changeable relay and wired up both inside rear lights to act as fogs too. Seemed the easiest solution and keeps the back illumintated as it should be.

Relay from maplins £4.99

Petrol to nearest Maplins £10.00

Beers for mate to wire it up £12.00

Rear lights as they should be........... Priceless !

I know you've done it now but here you go, it's one i looked at before buying mine.

Having seen that photo of the right side reverse lamps converted I'm glad I avoided it. My aim was to convert one either side to keep a balanced look to the rear. However now I have used the relay route I recommend it. The rear lights and brake lights (all four ) work as normal. When I want fogs the inside of the rear lights come on bright and the outisde remain the same and are used for the brakes. It solves the problem and leaves the rear as it should be.

The wiring diagram on the link above is what I've done but the only thing I would add it needs to be a changeable relay not a normal switch relay in order to get the full function of lights as above.

Hope that makes sense 1:confused:
