Hi Guys,

just a bought a stock 1993 twin turbo yesterday - slightly more exciting than my Rover 75....

Noticed coming back from the dealer that when driving normally ie about 70mph that it was reading about 5000rpm - is this correct? Seems a bit high to me...

Manual or auto?

In a manual you should be doing less than 3000rpm at 70 mph

If its in an auto I would hazard a guess that its not dropping into overdrive, and you've been cruising round in 3rd.....

Sorry yea auto box and the o/d switch is in (dashboard shows o/d off when I press it..)

70mph should be about 26/2700rpm from what i remember with an auto. Strange, 70 in second is on the rev limit, in 3rd i wouldnt have thought it would be as high as 5000, maybe 4000.

Look on http://www.twinturbo.net and find the auto transmission diagnostic and run it, see if you get any error codes.

Thanks guys obviously need to do a bit of research as to what I've bought!

Even in 3rd (OD off) you get 70 at 3500rpm ish. Sounds more like you were stuck in second!

remember when od is selected you feel a change into 4th then another small change into lock up - makes it feel like 5 speeds!

I seem to remember something about sticky gears in auto boxes being mentioned a little while back. Do a search and you may find that others have had the same problem.

I had sticky gears a while back and it turned out to be a bad connection on the autobox ECU, tho the ECU diagnostic said the throttle posn sensor was at fault

Hotrog56,,,if you need a comparison ,,or what ever , i could meet you ,,i`ve got a 91 jap spec auto that is spot on , (40,000 miles on the clock),,,,where in oxford shire are you?

And just to help :-

With Overdrive "OFF",,,,,NO 4th gear ,engine can rev out!,,,,Good when overtaking a load of cars , just press this button (overdrive to off) ,transmission drops a gear ratio and off you go like a bat out hell,,,,,,,

Power switch "ON",,,,Use of all 4 gears,,,ecu apparently increases the pressure in g/box , thus making gear changes quicker,,,and revs out to higher RPM,before changing gear ratios,,(can fit a auto line controller for increasing the pressures still,,but that is another post) ,,and :-

Hold switch,,,,,1st gear is locked out,,,so only ratios for 2nd , third and 4th are used ,,,slippery conditions, ice,etc ,,pulling away etc ,,,,,

Hope this helps on your diagnostics ,,,other than that if the car has been standing along time ,,try unplugging the auto ecu , let it reset and drive the car again , on the same stretch of road , noting what happens in each case,,,cheers mate ,,,let us know....

Thanks jonnyd64

I live in Bicester but work in London maybe we can get together at the wkend? - I'll try resetting everything tomorrow and check diagnostics on the autobox and let you guys know what happens....

HotRog - I'm in Milton Keynes with a 90 TT Auto. All I can tell you is it's very fast - the speedos broken and the engines covered in steam... I might have it back by the weekend!

I bet your pissed off ,,,hose was it or the rad?

Hi Guys,

Have disconnected battery and run AT Diagnostics and everything appears ok so I reckon it must be a mechanical fault - any ideas as what my next steps could be??

thats the same problem as i had and now can only get 2nd gear cant even get reverse so i got to get a new box cant even put a manual in as the wife can only drive auto`s ( silly *** ) oh well thats life and then you die ( just like the ZED )

JohnnyD64 - No idea, it left today on the back of a low loader, heading back to Hemel. I wasn't going to spend a sou on it until the selling garage had, had a look. I am paying 50% of the low loader cost though - as I could not get it recovered back to them.

Hopefully it will be back to me for the weekend.

What can i say Barryd , its good that its gone wrong so close to buying it ,least they have got to fix it ,,i trust they sold it to with some sought of warranty,,now would be a good time to check this through,, keep us posted ,mate ,,,meet up soon....

And ,,,Hotrog56, if you still have problems take it back mate,,you got warranty from the garage you bought it off,,let them sought it out,,,you`ve done alot of the checks your self ,,,it could well be a auto box change ,,,take it back to them.....let us know....

Barry,

Just being nosey, but where in Hemel did you buy your 300, as I live here.

Simon.;)

Will be speaking to them tomorrow - I think it the TPS gone but they can sort it as it cost me extra for the 2 year warranty!!

Simax - MCMinn Car Sales over on Galley Hill (HP1 3LD) they have loads of trick imports, all price ranges. I'm dealing with Rick.

So far the service whilst not up there with a main dealer / Mercedes-Benz type place seems pretty good. They are making good efforts to resolve the problem but in a more friendly back street type way - what ever that means.

To be honest they all look like they would rather nut you than serve you. but they are nice guys - so far!

Been there, went somewhere else!!!

Only on other people's information though.

They had a black 1990 tt import on a G plate, with large twin exhausts, which I was looking at, and was fortunate enough to intercept an inspector carrying out a survey for someone else. This was back in January 03. He warned me off, as it had been shunted and repaired. It was one of three, all black that they had for sale. For the price of a couple of pints this inspector suggested I look elsewhere. He seems to sell a lot of MPVs up there now.

Hope things go well for you,

Simon.
