This problem started 6 months ago. Car started to judder and then return to noramal.

It dissapeared but returned last week worse then ever(6000 miles later), what transpired is shes only running on 5 cylinders.

The driver side back left cylinder dosent seem to be sparking.

I swapped over the ignition coil to a different chamber and it worked fine , that rulled out the coil.

I got a new plug and checked that on other cylinder and thats fine too, arching nicely.

So after coil and plug are eliminated where do i go next

Could this be the dreaded PTU or should all cylinders go when the PTU gives up

Help appreciated

you given the injector and coilpack connector a REALLY good clean out? This happened to me and it took ,e ages to work out the problem. Id done everything and in the end was gonna have a compression test done to check the valves were ok, but gave the injector harness one last scrubout and it fixed it. I think it was caused because there was a fuel leak in the fuel line directly above the injector plug and fuel had dripped into it and done some serious corrosion. When I first took the plug off it was really jammed up with green shite.

So before you go buying things make sure all the connections in the bay are super clean...

Ive got the same problerm now and that started with it missing too.

Then it worked proper now im running on 5 cylinders i also swapped coil packs and cleaned the injector harness conectors and still no luck.

Im going to try another P.T.U just for peace of mind

Connectors are spotless

So thats another avenue rulled out

running on 5? some mistake surely i thought, it was football on 5 tonight!

Could be a few things.

Some times the ptu connection can come loose and you will loose a cylinder. however this is usually cylinder 1 or 6 as they are at the end of the connector. I doubt the loose connection to the ptu is the problem. If it's the top left cylinder (looking at the engine from the front of the car facing the rear) then it's cylinder 5.

I would start by cleaning the PTU connections, then test the the connections through the PTU. Looking at the PTU connection it has three prongs on one side and two on the other. With the two prongs at the top cylinder 5 will be the 3rd wire on the left.

If all is fine then I would test resistance from pin 5 on the PTU to pin 12 on the ECU. You may have a break in the wire somewhere.

Changed P.T.U problem solved i was missing number 5 cylinder driving all of a sudden started running bad so today i changed the transistor unit and its running fine again.:D

Being from Canada and having to deal with pure calcium being dumped on our roads for 6 months out of the year the issue of corrosion and or shyte in connections especially ecu's etc, drives us crazy. I have had an ECU go bad on me from salt soaking through the bakelite cover on an otherwise perfectly sealed unit. Ocean air can and does have the same effect, more so in the damp of winter. Don't know if this is of value or not just thought id post it in case ! Newbie to the site .

P.S. I Love the roads in the U.K. !!!! Canada's all straights and the corners have cows on em!

Problem resolved.

Seemingly after 12 years attached to a very hi temperature engine the PTU connectors on both sides had become brittle and were starting to break. Th Connectors themselves due to the brittle rubbers were leaving moisture etc in to the connectors. All 6 on one side and 7 on the other had a nice green coating.

Cleaned all connectors at the PTU. Fastened unit and leads back together properly and away she went

6 is far sweeter.
