I have seen 2 different links on this forum for modifying the low beam to take H3 bulbs, one requires soldering the other just a piece of wire with a blade terminal on one end and a spade terminal on the other. Do both work ? The one with the wire with terminals on both ends appeals to me, has anyone tried it ? If it works okay, why would anyone want to use the solder method, a bit risky, and you have to re-do it when you bulb needs changing.

Thanks

used the spade connector method and it works fine. it is fiddly to get behind the screw on the passenger side so in the end just wedged it with the bulb and when clamped inplace with the bulb holder nothing moves. Been done 2 months and no problems.....................yet.

I use the wire one with no real probs. Think I need to tighten the earth screw though as sometimes the dips go off and a little tap to the headlight brings them back again.

I think Jock has done it too

Just did the low beam mod, but the main beams come on (in a low power type mode) when I put the low beams on.

Anyone know what went wrong?

Thanks

I figured it out, I blew a fuse.

When I connected up the new H3 bulb I must have got the terminals backwards. The conector has a red and a green wire going to it, Is the green where you connect the new wire to?

Thanks

dont think the polarity on a bulb is important ( stand to be corrected) most likely the bulb didnt like being removed and jostled and maybe got dirt or fingerprints on them - I was redoing the earths on mine this weekend - beefed them up and neither buld survived the process.....got a set of 130w bulbs from Halfords for a fiver each and they seem nice and bright.

Thanks Bilky

I could not get the new Bosch H3 to work (but later I found out I did blow the fuse) It was starting to get dark, so I replaced the fuse, put the old back in and everything works fine.

I will have another go at it over the weekend.

Thanks

After doing the low beam mods so that you can use H3 bulbs, what is the favourite material for filling the void in the dustboot hole where the connector used to go.

Thanks

I must admit I havent usead anything.....the two wires come out of it so you cant really block it off totally.

Bilky,

Maybe it does not need anything, but it is a big hole. Maybe some Rockwool or some other flexible product might be worthwhile,

John

You could try a rubber bung of some kind maybe like on a test tube.

I have had dificulty in grounding the the low beam (low beam mods so I can use H3 bulb) on the darn little screw, so I was wondering, if I use a long piece of wire, can I use the engine or the body as a ground, or does it have to be grounded within the headlight assembly.

John

I have done this mod, it is a pain to get the wire in there but I think is worth the effort to get it right. Using a body earth should not be a problem , but think it would look sh1t

Thanks Jock, I guess I will persevere, I have already lost one screw which I unscrewed to far out......it ends up falling into the low beam headlight area by way of the slot just below the screw itself..........I guess it cant do any harm, I'm not about to try and remove the headlight to fish it out.

John

If you lose a screw I found a good replacement - its a screw that you use to build computers with - one that locates the hard drives and cdrom drives into the cage. Its got a small phillips head and is fairly flat. I can post a picture of one if you need it!

Thanks Bilky.........I was wondering what type (thread & size).....I got loads of the hard drive screws........will do it this weekend (providing it warms up a bit)

Thanks
