Sorry to here that mate ,are you sure the auto has problems?,,,Cause the jap auto box i know is known to be weak etc but sometimes its not the box,,,,,you know the power switch and the hold switch and the overdrive button ,these all do different things,,,so you need to be sure, they are working,, it can be a electrical fault.

This is as i understand it (help me out guyz if i`m wrong):-

Hold -takes the first gear out , so you pull away in second, then third ,forthetc, never using first while the switch is on ,,,wet icy conditions etc.

Power switch-i don`t think the forth gear is used, just 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

and then-overdrive alters the rev rande in which the car changes up to the next gear, depending on the switches of course.

I hope this helps , to be sure you have a problem or solves it ,,,fingers crossed:dance:

Other than that prices are all over the place , thanks to EBEY but i think a zx went on ebey with a head gasket gone for under £2000 so who knows ?

Agree with Jonny.

Check the electrics first - and its always a good idea to reset the ECU (battery off for 30 mins to overnight). Sometimes the gearbox can get itself a little confused.....

do an autobox ecu diag and see what comes up. If it's all clear then it's a fair bet that it's mechanical.

Re switches makes no odds where there set overdrive has no effect on or off also box has no kick down so i think its got a major prob.

Cheers Rob

It could be in need of adjustment....TPS and throttle cables can affect the change of gear. There is a microswith under the throttle pedal that should click when you push it down nearly all the way - thats the forced kick down switch. You should be able to hear it.

You would need to get it to someone with the equipment to check it out properly to be safe.

Don`t panic mate ,not yet!.... do the checks, better still , disconnect the battery like stuart says then check again and establish what is missing etc

Disconnected the battery first port of call left it unconnected two hours plus, only thing it seemed to effect was the LED clock which has started to work sort of lol.

Did diagnostic nothing showing there.

Does anyone know how much a secondhand box is likely to cost O and I guess has anyone got one for sale.

Cheers Rob

Latest event reverse now not working when reversing up hill. Checked fluid again level fine but fluid colour brown assume this means box is likely knacked.

YUK- get the fluid AND the filter inside changed - the filter may be blocked and causing you to lose gears. The fluid should be nice and clear. Brown is a problem.

You need to get the box flushed properly as just dumping the fluid only gets part of it out as theres still a fair bit in the convertor.

dont bother changing the fluid, If the filter is blocked and the fluid burnt, the box has had it. And spending money on a new filter and fluid change is just a total waste of money, time and effort.

Take out the dipstick and SMELL the fluid, if it smells burnt.......

I agree with all. If the fluid is brown and burnt, something is broke:cry:

If you had first and reverse, I'd go for brake band(s) being knackered. These might be replaceable with the gearbox on the car(???). If you've lost traction in reverse I'm guessing one or more of the clutches have gone.

Sorry to hear this - its a rebuild/replacement job.

Dont know what gear is what band/clutch, but very very few auot boxes allow you change the bands in situ. Other problem is the muck has by now been spread every where, and this will cause all sorts of agro when it sticks valves and sends your presures mad.

Sorry to hijack the thread but I am unable to go into overdrive, and I also need to rev it a fair bit 2k RPM to get it to go up hill....any thoughts ?

Sort of off topic... but, what do you mean "rev it to get it to go uphill?" 2k isn't revving it! Or does everyone else here drive on idle?
