I wonder if anyone could help...

I have owned my Z for a couple of months now and I have always thought that it's not THAT quick. I have done an ECU test and it came up with 55.

Anyway, I looked around and found a few sources that showed the speeds for each gear:

1st should be 43mph @ 7200 - I only get 35mph

2nd should be 72mph @ 7200 - I only get 65mph

3rd should be 107mph @7200 - I only get 97mph

4th should be 139mph @ 7200 - I only get 125mph (theorectically of course :o :D)

5th should be 165mph @ 6400 - well, I maxed out at 140mph, might have got 145 at a push (again, theoretical)

Have I got a problem? if so, what can I do to solve it?

Also, the car feels ALOT more powerful in the first 10-15mins of driving after I've left it for a few hours - it's got loads more oomph and sounds much lounder and really pins me to my seat. I can't help wondering if this is how the car is meant to be all the time but for some reason after abt 15 mins it goes back to 'normal' again.

Has anyone else had either of these two problems and if so, why and what to do...?

Thanks guys!

By the sounds of it, those gear ratios of yours are correct except 4th which should do 140mph and 5th about 180.

I have never got 70 in 2nd.

Is your car a Twin Turbo?

Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge? You sould be on saftey boost, but you say you have a code 55. Strange.

sounds like something on the cold start system sticking if the car slows down after 15 mins of driving.

If it maxs at 140 you do have a problem for definate.

You could be detting and safety boost is coming on. Have you tried Optimax? Did you notice any drop in the boost guage whn this happens?

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

It's a TT but on 1995 models the boost guage is only an option and mine unfortunately hasn't got one.

I do use Optimax and have done since I've had it. I've tried

cleaning all the sensor connectors under the bonnet and did an ECU reset and it does feel a bit better since but still not completely right!

The only thing I thought it could be is that the intercoolers are colder in the first 10-15mins and therefore the car should be quicker but if no-one else's is like this then why is mine?!

Paulg - have you heard of the cold start system sticking before? Is it a big job to fix??

Only an option? Don't thinks so mate ... check under the bonnet for 4 big pipes (2 of which go to the TB's). If you've only got two then it's a N/A, if you have four then you have a TT but most likely some numptie switched the speedometer cluster for a N/A one ... seen that done before

Regards,

first of all I hope you arent gunning it when stone cold. Next it might be worth getting the ignition timing checked for the correct advance in case the cas had been moved. Otherwise you might have a boost upgrade too high with mig tips. Also check your ecu to see if its been socketed and fitted with a new chip.

I doubt that the ICs are getting heat soaked in this weather but it could be the case if your doing short sharp bursts in traffic and no crusing to cool em back down.

A boost guage sound a worthwhile add on for you.

If it is going into safety boost 7psi instead of 9 or so then stopping the engine and re starting should re set it again.

surely the speed is liited by the gear ratio and not the ammount of boost you are putting out?

are you sure your revometer is reading correctly? have you bounced off the rev limiter?

or you may have bought a NA.... I believe the gear ratios are that same though.

I've seen some pics on here of a TT with no boost guage as standard. I think it was a later model too. Did you buy yours from someone off here? Is it black?
