It's sometimes possible to move my steering wheel sideways by about 20mm. Is this serious, what has caused it, and should I get it fixed? It happens when the cars moving and when it's stationary.

Cheers,

So do you mean it's loose, or there is some movement without the wheels turning.

Steering wheel 'play' in the manual is defined as 35mm or less.

I've had this. My mechanic fixed this in about 5 mins when it went for a service. Just tightened up some loose bracket thingy.

Ah, I see, so like the steering column is loose ... Sounds worth fixing to me !

I had this exact same problem. This is how to fix it, remove the lower console from under the steering wheel (4 screws I think) The you can see a bracket that the column goes through, loosen the bolts off (10 mm I think) and there are 2 packers - 1 each side, when you have loosened it all enough, these packers will push sideways towards the column, make sure they get nice and tight and then tighten the bolts back up. Voila. Bugged the hell out of me for ages!

Thanks guys - I'll give it a go tonight.

Cheers,

Andy
