I have a 1990 jap NA 2 seater.

For some reason the car seems to limit early in 3rd (about 6000 rpm), 4th (5500 rpm) and 5th (5000 rpm).

I have no idea why this is happening and its really annoying!!

I have only had the car a few months so i dont know where it was derestricted.

I went to CRD (calder racing development) and they all seemed pretty stupid. I told them the problem, but they had to have a check for them selves. Fair enough i thought, get it on the rolling road! Nope, they took it out on public roads (5 oclock, pissing rain) to have a look. After the boy who was driving (i went with him) got the arse out twice and told me about how he took a customers EVO out and bounced it of the floor after a jump, smashing the intercooler all over the place, i took my keys back and made an exit.

So, i dont really know anywhere near me (fife) that i can take it. Can anyone help me out?

How does the car drive ? experience any lack of power or does the car seem to struggle at higher speeds ?

How does it reach the limiter ? does the rpm creep up slowly and then just doesn't want to go any further or does the limiter kick in very suddenly.

First impression of your story, I would say one or both catalysts are blocked.

Its not the Japanese restriction to 112mph 180kph that is still in place? A KPH/MPH converter or still at kph?

What about Falkland in Glenrothes - They are into hot cars.

where in the kingdom are you?

I had the lilmiter in my NA kick in, but the reason was that the "box of tricks" someone had used as a derestricter was failing. I ended up fitting a set of uk (TT) clocks and doing the derestricting through the ECU. Give me a shout if you want a good base bin. file for the NA (in order to make a chip which removes the speed restriction and lifts the rev limit to 7200 rpm

Cheers

Ther doesnt seem to be any loss in power. It gets up the revs quick enough and doesnt have any problems in 1st or 2nd.

If a little confused if it is the derestrictor because it limits at 120mph in fifth.

Ill try Falkland, cheers. didnt think they delt with things like that. Im in Kirkcaldy.

Cheers jock, could you let me know a little more. Cant send pm's. (is this because i am a new member?)

it sounds like it is still restricted, indicated 120=112 actual.

does it start to missfire or just dye away and then come backup to the brick wall?

I did not think they had cats until 92!

Na, it doesnt slowly die away. If i have the foot down it gets up to 120 no bother then like hitting a brick wall. Pretty severe.

If it is the derestrictor, why does it happen in 3rd and 4th? Clearly not doing 112 in 3rd!

Thought they all had cats?

Then why the early limiting in 3rd and 4th?

Then why the early limiting in 3rd and 4th?

is 6000rpm in 3rd not still about that speed?

The limiter is speed based not rpm - ecu counts pulses from the gearbox output shaft.

A brick wall sensation really sounds like the speed limiter, not a fuelling or other engine problem.

They did, my first one was a 1988, it had cats.

Think willieO is spot on here, just sounds like your car is limited to 112mph, good news for you is that it cant of been thrashed round at 150mph all its life.

You might as well get it chipped to get the limiter off, if you do a search on chips youshould be able to find someone who can do you a chip cheaply.

.......Job Done!!!!;)

blimey, that'll be a rare one then! :D

So what kind of chip can you get for an NA? Does it change the fueling and offer any more performance. I thought this was limited to our turboed bretheren??

Not too sure about that. Its a NA remember! It aint doin 112 at 6000rpm in 3rd surely. Might go and find out!

If so, what kind of chip are you talking about? Just a derestrictor chip, or a superchip kinda thing?

If its a 'derestrictor chip' what price are we talking?

I was planning on getting a JWT ECU sometime in the near future, would this do the same job?

Where would a derestrictor chip go?

Qutie a few questions there sorry!

Think someone else has a 1988 one on here, is it Martinfa??

The chip I have fitted on mine removes the speed resrtriction and increases the rev limiter to 7200 rpm as said earler, fitting the uk clocks means took car of the conversion from KMH.

Trying to find a decent chip for an NA is difficult, I downloaded a bin file from the net and someone was kind enough to burn it on to a chip for me. Drop me an email on Hughfmcginty@aol.com and will give you more info.

There are quite a few NAs on here now, I am sure if we all got together we could get something done quite cheaply, but have tried it on a group buy scenario and got no response.
