I am looking to fit these Steve, they look very good;)

here is a Z block with them fitted:bow:

Good choice Iain, :D

Very interesting article where it mentions cylinder distorsion and the use of dummy heads when boring.

I still can't get to the bottom of the requirement for boring with dummy heads though. They are very rarely used in this country but the US / JAP tuners say this is very important issue.

Keep us updated.

Steve

You are suppsed to bore a block with a torque plate or "dummy head" and the main bearing caps and girdle torqued up as this pulls the block into the shape as it will be when assembled.

It ensures the bore walls are parallel.

TBH I wouldn't have thought a cast block would distort that much.

Hi Jez, that's what my engine builder also says!! Should find out this week whether this issue relates to my problem or not

Steve

Cast metal, which is used for the stock piston, is suitable for mass production but cannot maintain enough strength when used in those tuned engines that produces over 100hp per cylinder.

Erm.... I rest my case :D

What case?

No need for forged pistons unless you are after HUGE power... 100 per cylinder, 6 cylinders, 600hp - thats enough for most people....

LOL So you keep saying bud:rolleyes:

However at the end of the day show me one Z32 in the UK that has 600bhp on stock pistons:rofl:

When your talking about the tollerences involved in boring a block then the flex caused by torquing up your cylinder head is relevant, i know from the various types of machining work I used to do at work. Unfortunatly this means surface grinding a slab of steel flat and drilling/boring the neccesary holes in it to torque to your block and most engine shops couldnt be bothered with that because of the extra effort, hence they will tell you it does not matter. And it usually wont on an engine that produces 80hp and spends its life traveling to the shops.

Remember that all engine builders are not the same, some build race engines and some re-condition diesels all day.

Find a good one!

Paul

There's plenty around the world with much higher ambient temps - suits me :D

Like I said so you keep bleating on about:rolleyes:

SHOW ME 1 IN THE UK???????????

Had this conversation with Nico a few weeks ago,he said maybe if you coat the pistons you could get lucky, but how long would it last?

Stock pistons were designed for 280bhp not 600:D;)If you can manage to acheive this Andy then I will be real shocked TBH.

There's an SR20 powered S13 in the US running 600+ on stock bottom end. :)

I have a vid of it somehwere.

I don't doubt it can be done, but why risk it?

Why risk it? Cos I got a spare block? good enough for me :D

The fact is that if the engine is properly tuned (which, lets face it, at 600hp its pretty well tuned) then there is no need for forged pistons IMO

So you are telling me that Duff the mighty UK tuner can achieve this?

Mac,

Speak to Peter from SE.

He used to also believe you could only run about 400 BHP on stock pistons but has since been proven wrong in recent years.

There is a guy that has had work done at SE who is running stock pistons at about 560 BHP IIRC (not sure the exact BHP figure, but it was around this mark), Jaffa may be able to remember as we were in the conference room with Peter going through PSI curve ratio's and BHP figures a few weeks back.

Mac, you will see ;)

SMW1..... :D:D:D

Duff dont talk out your arse:D

SMW dream on:D

Well for those last 100bhp I may need to employ some SE secret mods :D:D:D

Hmmmm I hear the bitches have been back stabbing this weekend:rolleyes:

To clear things up SE secret mods is a RR laptop tune and NOT an off the shelf chip:bow:

No need to dream mate I was there :D. Go on ask Peter how much BHP a stock piston can take :slap:

But FFS don't ask Bob, because he wil say 30 BHP just to sell you new forged jobbies ;).

You know I'm kidding Bob :D.

IF you have a new engine with big intercoolers and oil coolers maybee and for how long???Mine is 10 years old and some you have a 13 year old engine. If you tell to Japanese mechanics which i believe are the best they're going to lough with you.Even the leather from your seats started to worn out think what's going on inside your engines.

Doesnt Mr Shrimpy's car have stock pistons? He runs over 600BHP!!!!!!!! (at the flywheel)

I'm with Macca on this one. I belieive you could make well over 600 on stock pistons but only for a very short while. Or you could by a Supra!:D And run it all day!

I'll go along with you, the Duffman and anyone else who agrees that stock internals are good for some big HP!:D

However! Ask me and anyone else who has a melted / damaged stock piston in their garage how much detonation a stock piston can handle, I think the answer is 'not alot'

Even with a correctly tuned big HP Z I don't think you can illiminate detonation worries and it therefore an insurance policy to fit forgies :D

I think I remember H Le Hir saying something about running a full tank of fuel at WOT!!! Who's first?

Steve

I think using forgies as insurance for det is a bit dangerous, might save you for a bit longer but it's more expensive when they go.

ideal oppourunity to fit lower comp pistons though if that's the way zedders go.

Forgies are nice and shiny though. :)

I keep taking mine out to polish them. :D:D

... if it's gonna go then there's nothing gonna save it!!! Mine are low compression and they used to be nice and shiny :D
