just ordered my new gear box mount to hopfully sort out my vibration problems. Is there any particular tricks or techniques for fitting one? Do I have to support the gear box while I'm doing it? Its an NA manual if that makes any difference

Cheers

I think there's only 4 bolts holding it in position. You will need to take the weight of the gearbox with a jack though & you may need to jack it further up to give the bottom two bolts on the mount clearance when removing.

Alternatively, you could remove the mounting & cross member as one.

cheers,

is there any particular point where I should jack the gearbox at? Don't want to damage it!

so long as you put a block of wood between jack and gearbox you should be OK. Jack it near to the mount if you can.

David,

I did mine couple of months ago, very easy job, I did mine on ramps with a hydraulic jack (with a block of wood) taking the weight of the autobox. Mine did not cure the vibration, so the centre bearing replacement is next on the list.

Good luck

thanks folks, looking forward to giving it a go. When I bought the car I was told the centre bearing had been done so hopfully this will sort out my problems - fingers crossed!

well, got the gear box mount fitted, thanks for the advice. Quite an expensive job since I had to go out and buy a jack and a socket set!!

And did it sort out my vibration problems? Did it hell!! Still really bad when the car is cold, gets much better (almost unnoticable when car is warm) Does that sound like the centre baring?

David

David,

That sounds identical to mine, the gearbox mount replacement did nothing to solve. From what I have read it is most definitely the centre prop shaft bearing.

A bit more expensive for the part, and a lot more work than the box mount. I think I will leave mine till the spring next year.

David,

Any chance of posting the part number fot GBM please?

Many thanx.

I can have a look on the delivery note from MJP, see if its on there when I get home tonight. Mine is for a NA manual - I have know idea if that makes any differnce.

David,

Your vibration when cold problem sounds remarkably similar to what my car is experiencing. Had a compression test done (when cold) which indicated that the number 2 cylinder was considerably down on compression. Once the engine was warm the same cylinder showed normal compression.

Now, cylinders don't normaly "repair" themselves so I put the question to Jeff at ZedWorld who in turn asked an engine rebuilder. They seem to be of the opinion that I have a "sticky" lifter when the engine is cold. Once the engine has had a chance to warm up and circulate hot oil it seems to aleviate the problem.

I'm not a great fan of flushing the system as this may dislodge gunk which eventually will do more damage than good so I'm a bit at a loss of what to do next.

Again, not sure if this is the same problem as you are having but it is worth considering ...

Danny,

I've been thinking about this and I'm increasingly thinking you may be onto something. The revs really drop when it happens which I guess you wouldn't see if it was just related to transmission vibration stuff.

Have you got any further with sorting yours out?

where did you get your mount from was it expensive

You also need to check your propshaft when it's off. You have to look for tight or siezed bearings in the universal joints or play in the spiders.

I got mine from Mike @ MJP (look on Traders Forum) - cant remember the exact price, about £70 I think.

I'll bet its not the mount, more like ly to be the prop shaft centre bearing.
