For those of you who are running 14psi or there abouts what is your TDC timing set at.

Just making sure I can squeeze every little bit of power out of the old girl for the RR day

at the moment mine is set at 12-13 TDC , just wondering if it would be safe to take it to 15

Featured Replies

The standard ginition timing is 15deg + / -2deg BTDC.

When I had my first boost upgrade, my ignition timing was set at 13deg BTDC. I then fitted a JWT chip and reset the timing to 15deg BTDC while running the same level of boost.

Technically, I don't see the point of increasing boost to a level where the ignition timing has to be retarded to stop detonation. A 1deg advance / retard on timing makes quite a difference on power output.

There are timing tweaks you can do by setting the timing at 17deg BTDC. If you get detonation then you retard this setting until the detonation stops.

You need to have a good ear for detonation when trying this and if your running stock turbo's then at least have a JWT or equivalent eprom upgrade.

12-13deg BTDC would be the normal amount of retard if you have stock turbo's & eprom!

I have stock tubs but an upgraded ECU and intercoolers

does the extra 1-2 degrees really make that much difference ??

It can do, as yours is retarded it is to prevet detting at higher boost, but sometimes the main low down power is decreased, if you advance the timing, then low down power is increased, but detting higher up the revs is possible, stock setting 15 degrees is waht most people are on and if your gonna mess with it, try that first and listen for detting, only those who have had the SE boost upgrade i have known to have their timing retarded, so in short retatrd a little or go stock, but advance at your own risk !

I only want to advance to 15 , nothing more than that

Doenst the SE chip retart the timeing?

I have had my boost increased to about 16psi, I am running the stock intercoolers and I have not had any detonation yet.

See no probs with that as 15 is stock anyways, just listen for any detting though just in case who ever set it at a lower range did so for a specific reason,

Err that would be me then when I first fitted the ECU just to be on the safe side

Go get yer timing light ot then fella, most upgraded ECU's/Chips settings are based on the car being at stock timing marks and as your not at the mo, possibly things are gonna improve even better once changed.

smithy

mine has been running fine at 17.5 psi alothuogh nd running 16 degrees JWT chip standard injectors and intercoolers. must use optimax fuel though.

now i have a prob since fitting an APEXI AVCR which SE fitted last week my car jumped to 22psi dodgy electronic valve hopefully sorted by next weekend though for RR day.

even at 22psi i got no detonation but car did hold back for a split sec at full boost(seemed to cut out momentarlly), not good peter at SE then took back to the workshop removed valve so i have stock boost for now,
