Wet and Horny

Yes, a sad attempt to get you all to read the post, sorry, but I do have a problem with my car's horn when it's very wet. The night before last it rained very heavily and in the morning when I started the car the horn came on with the engine, and stayed on until I switched the engine off.

In the end I had to take out the fuse for the horn and so since then I've been driving without a working horn, though I suspect that it's dried out enough to work ok again now.

Guessing that I'm not the only one with this symptom (it is a design error isn't it???) is there anyone out there who has fixed it?

Ta very much.....

Sounds like Water is getting into the wiring and is being used as a conductor to earth out the horn.

A bit like drip trays in a water cooler machine. :).

Yep, I do have splash guards, though I'm sure you're on the right line. Where does the water get in and which bit of the horn circuit is likely to be getting wet?

It`ll be the connectors directly on the back of the horn.

Thanks Mickey, where is that exactly? - sounded to be coming from the front nearside - am I anywhere near? - can I reach down there from inside the engine bay?

Hi guyz , you all sound so knowledgeable and i am very newbie, but this happened to my jap import and it turned out to be a trapped wire nr the rad , just thought i`d tell you it might help:slap: some thing else to keep in mind when your looking.

There are 2 horns on a Z.

If you look at the sides of the "mouth" in the front spoiler there's one on each side.

I had a problem with mine too - one made a squeeky buzzing noise and the other was dead.

Both were full of mud from years of spray getting in there.

I just removed them and bought a set of air horns from Halfords for £15. You just connect them to one of the stock wires.

I can now scare old ladies from half a mile!

Chris.

Thanks Chris and Johnny - I'm going to have a look to see if I can sort this - once and for all!

I had that problem last year, after severe downpour, but not only did the horn go off which I had to disconnect, it also shorted out the other things including the ECU and the car would not run above 2k rpm.

Turned out that water from the T top drain in the A pillar was leaking onto a terminal block and shoting everything out.

Took QAS( Local Autobox and electrical specialist) a few days to track it down, and put in a new unsplit drain tube that extended to where it was supposed to go, i.e. outside.

Everything OK since even in severe storms
