Is anyone able to tell me how much it is likely to cost to fit an electronic boost controller, I know it does differ from place to place? They all seem to cost similar amounts to buy but can anyone recommend one inparticular?

I guess this is the best thing to do once an exhaust and filter have been sorted?

Thanks,

Justin :)

Greddy Profec e-01 is the one to get or Blitz SBC, you'll wanna get chip/induction/exhaust before ya whack the boost up. Without the chip you'll kill the car

Cheers for that. I guess you are talking about a fuel cut defencer chip? I have a MR2 turbo and have a ZX on the way from Japan. Alot of Mr2 owners use a Unichip which takes care of upping the boost and sorting the feul cut etc. Is there anything like that available for the Zx and if so are they any good or should I just stay with the idea of an Electronic boost controller?

Justin

You'll need both for the Z, we don't use a FCD - you need a chip from JWT/SE, basically it just has fuel maps for the higher boost you'll be running. You'll need a boost controller as well to actually up the boost.

Very easy to do!', i've never fitted one before and fitted mine with no probs. Even dome the chip myself too!

DO NOT fit a fuel cut defencer to any turbo car - yes you'll lose the fuel cut BUT ALSO your ecu will not provide any extra fuel for the increased boost! The FCD simply 'clamps' the airflow meter signal to the ecu so that it doesn't think that much air is entering the engine. The problem with this is that the ecu uses the airflow meter to guage how much fuel should go in. Set a maximum for the airflow meter and thats the maximum the ecu will fuel for.

Ok, you say, I'll fit an AFR. Erm unfortunately not! The afr works by increasing/decreasing the signal from the airflow meter. What will happen is the FCD will clamp the voltage just before where fuel cut would appear, then the AFR will add a certain voltage to the signal - taking the airflow meter signal to the ecu above the limit for fuel cut again. So the two will cancel each other out!

You need to chip the ecu. This is relatively straight forward. It involves fitting a 28pin socket in place of the stock chip (inside the ecu) and then fitting a reprogrammed chip with the maps extended for fueling above stock levels.

Sorry to go on but do this wrong and its bye bye engine.

Thanks Andy,

that has cleared up a few things for me.

I would still like to know howq much this whole chipping of the ECU will cost me including fitting. I know it depends on many factors but just a rough ball park figure.

Will I actually gain any power from this or is it only done to enable a rise in boost with the fitment of some kind of boost controller?

Many thanks,

Justin

There are planty of 'copy' chips about and they're well, as cheap as chips!

(sorry couldn't resist that one!)

if your ecu has a stock chipped soldered in you'll have to undo it and solder in a socket for a new one (then you can change chips around with relative ease). It all depends how good your soldering is - you could fry the board of course!)

You should get slight increased power from a chip, but the main plus is that the car can take proper advantage of the induction/boost improvements properly (ie more fuel etc)

If you're reasonably handy, then you could budget around

£150 induction

£50-100 chip

£450+ for a controller

and please don't put a cheap exhaust on (no names in case I offend anyone) but speak to a proper specialist like Tube Torque in Macclesfield first.

Thanks Nigel,

I think I will leave the soldering to an expert.

These "copy" chips, are they any good and do you know where I can get them from?

I only know of two available so far, the JWT which I notice you have on your car and the SE which I have heard alot about.

I think unless the copy chips are any good then I will probably go with the JWT.

Cheers,

Jusin

Can we keep copied chips off the forum and into PM's by any chance ?.

I think that in the near future it's going to cause some problems if you shout it out too much if you know what I mean ?

LOL Good point Stu ;)

Justin, John Dixon off this board has just socketed my ECU for me. He then put his deep fat fryer on and made me some fried potatoes ;) Seriously though, he did socket my ecu but then did me my very own map - based around the mods I have. Its not been tuned to the vehicle properly, don't get me wrong, but its a damn good stab in the dark ;) Car now MUCH more responsive and dare I say powerfull. Although the difference I noticed will be more than usuall do to the fact I was running a stock ecu on much bigger turbos - the map is now opened up and the injectors are on 100% duty - bugger LOL 740cc/min injectors next for me :D

Contact John and see what he can do for you - top bloke, very friendly and always willing to help... ;)

Thanks Andy,

I will get in touch with John when my car appives in Southampton and see what he can do for me.

Sounds like he knows what he is doing.

Justin

I never heard of John Dixon, no sir, not me. Sounds like a nice bloke though, theoretically speaking. And of course, all my posts about chips are simply theoretical. just like my ecu upgrade - all theoretical, allegedly.

Only problem with my (theoretical) chip is that it seems to run very rich on idle, putting out quite a bit of white smoke and a rich mix smell.

I guess a bespoke rolling road programmed one would not have thsi problem, but I believe this service is very hard to come by.

Aaahhh, cheers guys!!

Justin, give me a buzz whenever suits, I'm away for a week but any time after should be OK.

Cheers

can we keep gay comments off the forum please sweetie ;)

If ya need any help fitting the boost controler just drop me a line, and i'll give ya a hand m8

Thanks for the offer mate. I'm not a terrible distance away from midhurst. Nice pub there actually. Spread Eagle I think its called.

Anyway, I am new to all this so would not say no to a hand when I get the bits and pieces.

Justin

No probs m8, i'm in godalming at the moment so just give us a call when you need a hand and i'll be pleased to help!:D

Ok, thanks again Matt,

I might well be getting one soon second hand so a hand from someone who knows what they are doing to fit help fit it would be most appreciated:)

I will not get the car for about 7 weeks though or as long as it takes to get from Japan anyway!

The car is a 1990 TT manual with an HKS Drager zorst. By the time I fit say an Apexi induction kit and a get a boost controller fitted do you know what sorta power I can expect, say at 14 psi?

Justin

My God!

That is alot of power!

Any idea what sorta performance figures a Manula Zed with that kinda power would be capable of?
