Morning y'all!

I'm about to buy a nice Alpine ICE kit: CD/Tuner, Component speakers for the front doors, 1" tweeters to be placed over the door airvents, 10" subwoofer and an Amp. I have a couple of questions for all you audiophiles...

1. Will I need a separate battery to power the system - I imagine that the standart Z32 battery is already at capacity. If so, where would be the best place to put this extra battery? And will the stock altenator be able to carry the extra load?

2. I am going to custom fabricate the sub enclosure for placement in the boot (extreme left & right back). One side will be for the sub, the other for the amp. How much ventilation does an amp require?

3. I've been adviced by a professional installer (used to do work for competitions etc.) that I shouldn't put any speakers in the back (i.e., the 6"x4" ones mounted by the C-pillar). Apparently that screws up the sound balance. Any comments on this?

I'm having it installed professionally - by the afore mentioned guy - as I have never done anything like this before myself. Anyone know what the going rate is for something like this? (just for comparison).

Many thanks for your comments!

Later!

What do you mena no speakers in the back!!!

how will that upset the balence, well youll only have sound fromt he front, i cant agree there, you need only light mids int he back ,b ut you must fill it in.

standerd battery should be fine unless you spend time with the car standing still playing music.

well the amp should have a heat sink to start with, but again depoend son how much work it is gfoing to do, you must cool them but i recon not as much as people make out.

just my two cents before im carryin 120 kg of bricks in my backpack walking in the karoo lookinf ofr nothing lol

Dan the Man,

Yep, Tooley is the ICE God! REZPECT to El Tooley Generale... 300wink.gif

I asked Mr. O'Tooley about the very same at Billing. He's got some bollox Focal Woof Woofers in the boot with his amps. He told me that the battery is quite a monster for the Z especially for the auto. so providing the battery is healthy it's more than upto the job. Don't know what you mate is going on about speakers in the rear? Tooley's sound fantastic, not to mention the fact that he had some nice Sony's where the stock speakers go in the rear, hidden under the grills.

Plus he's running various lighting, strobes I think etc. and a pukka DVD system...playstation etc.

He also told me and the Mat Lad that this merry little lot would go for about 3 hours I think he said before his batter would be Phuket!

So I don't think you are gonna need any extra juice for yours, should be more than capable of handling that lot!

Tim

well this is what happens when you use too much ice lol

smile.gif Thanks guys - I though it was weird not to have anything in the back ... Guess I'll start looking for some Alpine mids to add to the system.

Tooley! You out there?

Dan mate,

Go to the rides section and have a look at Tooley's section of pics, you'll see what you're up against... 300wink.gif

Tim

Nice ICE! Is that yours Eric?

The standard battery will be fine, if you are looking for pro sounds then no speakers in the back just good mids and tweeters up front. If you want quality go for Cerwin Vega, you will never hear a better speaker trust me.

Have a look at my system and the one i built for mark in the rides section, if you want DVD PS2 or TV i can do the lot.

If you look at Marks even with all he has in he can still get at the spare and get the tops in (not an easy job).

ola gringos and fellow freedom fighters of the anti ginger peoples liberation front........your normal battery is more than up to the job if ure going to stay under 1500 watts.......go for 12's or 13's subs as 10's are not up to a severe pounding and you can get away with having no speakers in the pillars if all you want is grunt and bass but for my money you are better to put some in for some rear fill when you are not wanting booming bass and even more so if your going to buy the new f1 alpine screen because you will benefit like i did from have 5.1 surround sound when watching dvd's.......having seen bobs work although he didn't do mine i would say he does a damm good job and should be cheaper than the guy ure using at the moment.....what alpine install are you looking into as you need to be looking at the new f1 status stuff if not you could save yourself a lot of money by going for kenwood and focals which not only are cheaper apart from the focal subs but are better and come with more features.....i'm toying with the idea of putting another two focals in the boot and moving the amp into a fibreglass enclosure giving me more space for the subs to get more of a box and shift some real air.....watch this space cos with four in the back i'm gonna have a whole new form of propulsion......one last thing you get what you pay for with ice and my little set of toys cost me more than the car itself thats why i have to wait until next year before i start going down the mental turbos and modding route but hey a good ice install stomping out tunes and hardcore porn draws more crowds than metalic green 300's anyday muhahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

And Tooley gets nicked by the Punctuation Police again.... biggrin.gif

Bob, Tooley - thanks for the comments.

I am not interested in creating alternative forms of propulsion (as Tooley so nicely put it). What I am interested in is a clear and crisp sound environment where the sound is coming at you from all directions. Not bothered at all about heavy base (hence the 10" sub) but it needs to be quality stuff. Alpine F1 is way out of my budget for the moment but I do like their "base engine" control which will allow you to manage the sub's output. I've had an alpine system before and am well impressed with their stuff.

Ciao!

Bob - how much would you charge for the install? I'm going to personally fabricate the enclosures but need help with the wiring etc.

Bob quick question,

u mention that Cerwins are the best way to go and to an extent I definitely agree, but have you heard of a make called Xine. They make a high end component set which having heard them sound the nuts!!!! The local ICE shop was trying to flog me a set of them, and a 10" DLS Macdaddy sub??? What do ya reckon... worth the investment or is there better out there???

Chris

People with Escort Cabriolets are not allowed on here LMAO

Only joking mate smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif:

Hows it going???

Danny,

What he could have meant is don't bother changing the rear speakers, just power them off your head unit. I was told the same thing, you need rear sounds but just for staging.

I'm doing the same thing with the sub, just got a 10" Kicker sub this week, just got to get round to doing it. Let me know how you get on.

If you want to do the fitting yourself (wiring etc) let me know. Don't buy the cabling from the normal shops my mate got me some gear at around half price (trade warehouses). I'll help you with the fitting, it's a piece of piss (unless you want it done pro - then use Bob (top bloke))

Vijay

Just put a 12 inch fosgate sub in mine, built the box myself out of mdf. Easy.

I have the amp in the boot and run the power cables down one side of the zed and the audio cables down the other.

I was surprised how easy it was to do a nice tidy DIY job myself, as I usually subscribe to the spaghetti method of wiring.

Go for it!!

As someone who will kick Tooley's ass when I get my sounds fully installed (it's a silver Z mate before you have a go! LOL) I would say you have no probs with the Z alternator and battery.

I had 2000 watts **RMS** running from an Alfa 145 Cloverleaf with 4x 15" Subs etc before and that only had an extra gel battery installed in the boot. Fine when fully charged and revving but soon started to quieten down if stood still.

If you overload it you will only get less muuzik. Lack of power = lack of soundz as long as you use some meaty cable. I had a 120A fuse inline... Serious welding to chassis if it shorts!

Soon to get the gear installed in the Z and looking forward to it LARGE.

By the way the performance & MPG really starts to suffer when you load up an alternator to the max and a bigger Amps alt is even worse... think aircon but far worse.

P.S

I got stopped by the pig shit filth 32 times in 1 year for noise pollution...

Seriously!

LOL

One pig said he had walked a mile across town to see where the noise was coming from... biggrin.gif

I'm okay cheers Senna...

Hows the batmobile going????

I'm loving my Escort!!!! Its about to go in the bodyshop for a nice coat of Standox Cataluna Splash paint!! God knows why I'm spending loads of money on the Dagenham dustbin!! Still missing my Z though!!

Vijay - Thanks for the offer matey. I will take you up on it! I am just about to buy the gear and then only need time to get the enclosures sorted. How are you getting on with it? Are you going to take out the styrofoam stuff that's holding the jack and tools? My sub requires a minimum of 0.66 cuft of space so mine are going out the door! I won't have much time until about Sept. 5-10 (girlfriend gone on holiday ...)so will probably get it all sorted at that stage. Keep in touch!

Cheers!

Danny

no problem, just let me know when, as yer used to doing the drive to London, it'll probably be easier to do it at mine (got all the tools and shit).

I got rid of both of the foam pieces, on the left is the cd changer and the sub enclosure is goin on the right. I'm hoping to start it towards the end of the week. I'll let you know how I get on.

Vijay

I tried a couple of different rear speakers, unfortunately they brought the rest of quality down... I'm still looking/thinking of alternatives that fit stock housings... well - I am now you lot brought it up
