Hi, I have just purchased a lovely 1990 Manual ZX from Japan. I would like to know how much power it is quoted at. I always thought it was around 280 but I have been told by someone that manual's had more power than auto's, something in the 300 region. Anyone clear this up for me. I also have a upgraded exaust on mine. What sorta power increase can I expect roughly from it?

Many thanks,

Justin:-)

Your guess is as good as anyone's. Depends on the state of the engine, turbos, etc really. Stick it on a set of rollers to get a good idea... like bringing it to the NissTech / 300ZX.CO.UK rolling road day!

Manuals are not more powerful than Automatics. Manual transmissions are more efficient than Automatics, and less power is lost from the engine to the wheels.

Its near impossible to say what power you are producing, as every car is different and each year of car is slighly different too.

Sports exhausts can have a gain from 2-6% depending on the make.

I dont understand the different years running different power thing. I have a 1990 TT. Why would that give lower power than say a '94 example as long as the engine was low mileage and well looked after?

Cars are always changing. In 1996 Variable Valve timing was dripped because of emissions laws.

Little things make differences. I think the ECU isnt the same for every year.

Thanks, Stuart. I am learning all the time. I have an MR2 turbo at the mo but just need to learn a few things about Zx's before mine arrives at Southamton.

Good Moaning ;)

The 280bhp is a little misleading.

There is a Japanese law which says no mass produced car can be over 280PS. Japanese measure power in PS not BHP, but 1 PS is virtually 1BHP, so people take 280PS as 280BHP, when infact 280PS is 276BHP.

As I understand the 280PS law came into effect after the launch of the 300ZX, so it missed it. I think the law actually came out about the same time as the Surpa and the 3000GT/GTO as they are rumoured to have 320BHP from standard.

In 1996 Variable Valve Timing was dropped due to now emissions laws, and according to many sources, the power DROPPED to 280bhp. So if it dropped to 280 it was obviously higher.

What could also cause the rumour about the difference in UK and Japanese cars, is the fact Japan run a higher quality fuel than over here and the cars are tuned to run this fuel, like a UK ZX is tuned to run on the UK fuel. So when a Jap car runs on UK fuel it wont be as powerful as it was on Jap fuel, and it may even be less powerful than a UK car because the ECU has been optimised to run on the UK fuel.

But we are talking small amounts of power, some people dont even notice it. You can run Optimax or Super Unleaded which helps, but again some people cant tell the difference in performance between the 2 fuels.

Why did you go for a 300ZX? Some one on this forum has just gone from a 300ZX to a MR2 Turbo.

Thanks for the explanation:-)

I went from an MR2 to a ZX I guess beacuse of the fact I wanted a Rev 3 MR2 turbo but with a t-bar, like the Rev1 I have now but they seem so rare so I thought the Zed would be a nice change and that big blown V6 really appeals. I just hope it is a match the MR2, it has been a brilliant car to me. I must get it sold soon to make way for the Nissan if anyone is interested?

I might know someone post the details mateand i will see what i can do:dance:

Simplest improvement that you can make is to

change the air intake to Apexi. 'Tho I did see a rather nice

looking twin intake for tt advertised on eBay.com.

And our own Smithy does a ss twin too.
