I have just ordered a cd from Amazon.

I have now got an email asking me to fax a credit card statement to them for confirmation of my address. Is this normal practice? I am very wary of things like this.

Cheers.

They've never asked me to do anything like that.

Are you getting it delivered to a different address to where your card is registered?

A lot of companies are really tightening up on this and many have stopped delivering to anything but the registered address but I've never been asked to fax a copy!?

No, delivery address is the same and another thing was they said not to ring customer services as they won't deal with this.....

Greetings from Amazon.co.uk.

Please note that your Marketplace order is currently on hold pending the

verification of your billing information. We will be happy to proceed

with your order as soon as we receive a recent bank/credit card

statement for the debit/credit card you referenced for this order.

At your earliest convenience, please fax us a statement which displays

the billing name and address for the card. Our fax number is:

0208 636 9326 (from within the UK)

+44 208 636 9326 (from outside the UK)

Please include the order number or the email address of the account

under which the order was placed in your fax.

Please note that this transaction can not be held for more than 7 days.

You will not be able to access your account online until this

verification procedure has been completed. However, it is not

necessary to open a new account or place a new order; we will complete

the processing of outstanding orders once your billing information has

been verified.

Thank you for your patience with our security measures.

Please note that our customer service will not be able to assist you

with this matter via telephone. Please write to

address-verification@amazon.co.uk should you have any further

questions.

Best regards,

James they will be able to tell you if this is their own security practices I would of thought that is a standard customer service question if they dont wanna help maybe word it subtley like "Im thinking of ordering online with you and was wondering what security mesures i am likely to encounter and have to go through" dont see why that is not a customer services question!

WTF??? Why cant customer services deal with it???

If I were to set-up a credit card scam, thats what I'd write...

FFS You're not wrong!!

Bit naughty this....but I'm sure this number can put you through to someone useful...

Cheers for that Pete, I will give that a go, thanx very much.

I was getting very wound up trying to find a phone number!

That's cos their e-mail said they wouldn't deal with it on the phone.

Send them an e-mail instead. But it does sound odd. I've bought stuff off Amazon and never had what you describe.

Cheers - Gio

Only thing with sending an email is make sure you dont use the one off the request as this to could be bogus or check it out first

Oh look - here's a couple of numbers on the back of the order I just got:

0800 279 6620 tel

(The non-free number is 020 8636 9451 and their fax is given as 020 8636 9401 which looks similar to the fax number)

I just rang 'em up to be awkward and they say that sometimes they do ask for fax verification - you can call them on the above number and they'll sort you out matey!

Never had that from Amazon before, but I have been ordering from them for some time.

Incidentally, on the scam front, I received this rubbish this morning :-

Nice try scum bags .....

Sounds like a classic credit card scam to me!

Faxing a credit card statement would give them all the info they need to use your card at will.

Don't do it!!

Thanks for your help guys.

I managed to get through with that number Pete got. My email was from them and the particular dept that I have ordered from do require a copy of my c/c statement faxed to them.

I then explained I wasn't happy with all my details popping out of a fax machine at their end, so I cancelled. Some careless doughnut might just leave this piece of paper lying around. I asked what they would ask for had I paid by switch but they didn't know. a bank statement I presume. I wouldn't of faxed that either.

Depending on what you were ordering, have you tried www.play.com . I used to order from them while I was living in Italy and using a U.K solo card and they were both prompt, efficient, cheaper and never asked me to send personal info by post, e-mail or fax.:)

Hope it helps!!:D

Only ever heard of this if it is your first order from a company but you want the item deliveryed to another address other than the address where the statements for the card that you ae using go to. Does thi smake sense ?
