Hi,

I just put 17in. Kahn wheels on in place of the stock 16s and now from the passengers side (back or front I am not totally sure) there is a ticking/clicking sound that gets faster as the car gets faster.

I can't see any obstructions or liner rubbing on the tyre tread. The car was fine until the wheels went on. It is a SWB Jap non-turbo and I put on 9.5x17 at the back and 8x17 at the front.

I know this might be a very elementary question but could someone give me an idea of what might be wrong. The wheels made no noise at all until I drove off after the new ones were fitted.

Also when I move the wheel left going at a moderate speed (30-40) there is a knocking that sounds like it is coming from the wheel/steering column.

Please give me a clue.

Rich

Are your alloys clearing the brake caliper? It could be catching.

You could also try cleaning your brakes with some brake cleaner spray. My car makes the ticking noise after I change the brake pads, a quick spray and wiggle the brake pins (To make sure they are seated correctly) and it went for me.

Was your car making the clunking noise before you changed your wheels or is this another thing that occured after you put your new wheels on?

If its after, you had better jack up the car, get under it and see if the wheels are touching anything when you turn. They shouldnt but if you got the wrong offset wheel they could, which would also contribute to the wheel noise.

Had something similar in my other car - I found two wheel nuts werent torqued up tight and the wheel was moving slightly against the hub each rpm giving the clicks. Sounds obvious I know but I was sure I'd tightened those wheels properly when they were off recently.

Better check it out as even some hot braking on just new wheels can melt the paint on the hub to wheel contact surface as the heat transfers from the hub. Result is paint oozes out and the nuts are no longer holding the wheel tight onto the hub if you see what I mean. Last thing you need on a quick car is a wheel coming off!!

also check the correct hub ring is on the wheels so that the wheels are centring properly and not running off centre slightly giving the steering wheel knock.

Where did they put the balance weighs? mine were hitting a rod arm on the back, made a ticking noise.

not a stone stuck in your tyre tread is it? LOL

Cheers for the replies.

Checked for stones first!!

We jacked it up and, wait a minute, these wheels nuts are loose. ooops. The guy who put the wheels on hadn't torqued them up properly. It is running fine now.

and the wheels look good.

Thanks for the ideas. Someone somewhere has always had the same problem...and sorted it out. I had been sure it was the wheel rubbing somewhere but couldn't see where.

Not the best pic, but here are the wheels. I think some others might have these too- Matty? I wanted something simple, 'classic' clean lines etc etc. I can't STAND split rims, or loads of spokes. Some people have said here they have 19s (!!!!) I do not know how they fit them on unless they have elastic bands for tyres. I had 17s with 40 front 45 back profiles and they only just seem to fit. Maybe its just paranoia. I thought the dinky 2 seater needed something not too overwhelming.

I like these ones. They were recommended on another thread. I didn't want to mess about with spacers etc. they went on fine. Just got to remember to make sure all the nuts are torqued up properly next time:rolleyes:

another slicktop member, getting quite popular now lol, seems to be more and more NA's too. Looks good mate.

So have I bought the one they flogged to poor Japanese people? Or just old men? Oh well, I am moaning on on another thread about thinking I have made a mistake not to go for a TT so I'll shut up now.

Hey sraaeea, see you still have not figured out the reading part yet, LOL.

Hey, no offence, just pullng your chain.
