I started the Z up on Friday morning and I heard a clicking coming from under the bonnett, like a relay clicking but not constant, would click 4 or 5 times then stop, then click a couple of times and stop.

This made the idle really eratic and went up to 2,000 down to 1,000 (engine was cold) then back up again

I lifted the bonnett and then I managed to figure out that the sound was coming from the area at the back of the engine next to the ABS unit on the left (group of connectors together)

I stopped the engine, went and fetched some WD40 and a small screw driver to clean up the connections, did that and the clicking went away, drove down the road about 100 yards and clicking came back, then stopped when I stopped and let the car idle.

I nudged accelerator and the clicking came back but no rough idle!! (wierd!!)

I drove to work and nothing all the way there, no rough idle at lights etc, no clicking but something just doesn't feel right........like it's struggling a bit (but it still boosts as it should etc...)

Is there anything to do with the fuel pressure up in that area at the back/left of the engine next to the ABS unit??

Help appreciated!!

Cheers,

Matty.

Anyone????

Mine's been making an odd clicking noise too. It clicks 4 or 5 times every so often but the noise seems to come from behind the dash in the middle.

Could yours be the same thing?

I found that turning the aircon onto the windscreen stopped it making the noise. I haven't got around to fixing it yet though.

I have heard the odd click from the dash too. I think its the motors changing the vent direction.

I would say the battery needs a charge! (or is duff)

This always cured the same clicking noise for me!

Check the adjustment of the TPS. Sounds like the throttle may be right on the edge of the hard idle switch on/off point...

I've had both of those types of clicking in the past and I reckon they're different ! I had the click you've got for months Matty, and the jumps in engine idle speed that went with it; Bob Ford at Arriva Peterboro fixed it - cleaning the (AIV ??) I think - the small metal mesh cube thing at the top of the engine (You can tell I'm real technical eh ? ;) ). It cured it for a few months then came back so Bob changed it and I haven't heard it since.

The Z has been okay since I last posted this problem, then this morning I turned the Z over and fired up okay idled for about 1 minute then it clicked a couple of times then decided it wanted to click..........

........usual problem of wild idle so I thought I'd wait it out until the engine was warm........

.....no clicks but a sound of running water across the top of the dash from the same place as the clicks, and then more clicks...

....then once cool the revs had dropped to 850-900 and it felt like the engine was missing every so often, very lumpy indeed....

SO I revved it upto 3,000rpm and all the way there it felt like it was missing..

Any idea's anyone, very lost.........

Sounds a bit like a Blown Head Gasket as the symptoms you describe are similar to when it happened to me on my supra, gurgling noise was the sound of the heater core emptying a little water into cyl #6 and sucking air back up, also causing the car to shake / miss and generally run lumpy, so I bought a Z instead and now it's stopped working without any symptoms *lol* boy do I know how to pick 'em!

Hope this isn't the case for you mate n' it's something simple like a dodgy harness/connector that has a poor contact/slight breakage in the wire?...

No blown head gasket mate!! (fingers crossed)

All the fluids are clean and as they should be, no odd smoke and no overheating! so no probs with head gasket.

What I did find however, was a very 'dirty' and green TPS, so I cleaned that up and hey presto no more dodgy idle and no more rough sounding engine.

No clicks either, now that is wierd..........

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Matty.

Great news m8y!

Isn't it funny exactly how much stuff can go funny on a Z and yet have symptoms that point to the complete opposite of what is actually going wrong?!

Maybe the car had a sense of humour designed into it at the drawing board stage? *lol* And if anyone can do it, it's certainly the Japs! :D :D
