Hello again folks,

Well my car is still smoking after doing the PCV valves so I guess its likely to be the dreaded turbos after all. Before I go and get the engine pulled and the turbos replaced is there anything else that could be causing the smoke.

It definetely has an oily smell to it and a tinge of blue although to be honest I'd say it is mostly white / grey. I'm not losing any water either.

Could it be the bores / rings (oh my god expensive !!) and would a compression test show this up?

Currently researching garages and prices for turbo replacement in my local area but the bills gonna be big thats for sure.

The car only smokes at idle and I never see any evidence of smoke when looking in the rearview mirror when driving the car. After stopping at a set of traffic lights it takes 20-30 seconds for the smoke to appear and the car never smokes when cold. Sometimes both exhausts smoke, sometimkes its only the one Is this a classic case of turbo rear seal failure? The car decatted s/s exhaust and has covered 80000 miles so all this does point to turbo failure or am I missing something?

Cheers again for all the help.

Martin.

Hello Martin,

I do feel for you as mine is doing exactly the same and I had my turbos replaced less than 2 years ago (and not even 10k on them). Did you change the PCV pipes on the front? as these contain restrictors and what looks like some sort of filter.

Vijay

Hello Vijay,

I did the PCV valves and the short lengths of hose immediatley to the rear of the vlaves (about 5 inches long). They had some sort of metal filter ring in them half way along the length of the tube.

Is this what you are referring to?

Martin.

Vijay is right! The hoses which tend to cause the smoking are the front ones ;) Change them before doing any other work ;)

Cheers guys. What about the one at the back part number 11826B ?

Not worth changing with the engine in - there's no restrictors in it, and it was an absolute b**tard to change with the engine on a stand, let alone in the car..

Me and John Dixon did the one at the back of mine - it was a pig to do but we did in the end with long nosed plier, scalpels, pliers, and lots of different pokey tools.

Battery out of course.

Hi Martin

What oil are you running?

I changed mine from 10w-40 to 20W-60 fully synthetic and this cleared up the small amount of smoke still being emmitted after having my PCV's replaced.

I'm still running 10W40 at the moment. I think I'll replace the front pipes first and see what difference that makes to the smoke. I suspect I'll still have to change the turbos though.

Cheers.

Martin.
