Can anyone help??!

I seem to be getting a rattle from the top of the engine. It seems to come and go. When it occurs if i turn the engine off and restart it a few minutes later it seems go. I have tried changing the oil and using a thicker oil. After changing the oil the rattle noise did not occur for a couple of weeks.

I am thinking that it may be Tappets or a sticky valve?

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

cheers!

Had the cambelt changed? I had one with VERY similar symptoms, changed the cambelt and the VVT springs and the noise went. There's possibly two reasons I can think of:

1) The tensioner was knackered - it was jammed fully shut and the belt was FAR too slack. Maybe the belt was slapping the cambelt covers.

2) The VVT springs MAY have gone soft - the old ones were not broken, but like I say, they may have gone a bit soft in their old age (bit like macca :D)

Only a stab in the dark really but this did happen so could well cure it for you.

Anybody with a Porsche ;) :D

as it was my car!!!

Rattles and rumbles used to come and go but worst when warming up to normal temp, but kinda quieter after a long run, but like Andy says could've been anyone of those things or a combination....... Hope you get it sorted.....

cheers Jon...;)

Cheers guys!

I have know the Cambelt was done quite recently but not sure about the tensioner and VVT springs so i will look into it and hopefully solve it!

Hey pork928.

You leave us MkIII Cortina owners alone! Admittedly it is a bit tappetty, but that's the fast road camshaft (well its my excuse anyway!).

And its just as much fun at my TT as well (but in a different way, of course!)

StuartR :)

Hey there Westy,

Are you the same Westy that used to post on the wscc forum and owned the 1998 Red Westfield with the 2.0 litre VX in it?

All the best.

Martin.
