My handbrake's really crap.

It does less than **** all. I've adjusted the rear shoes through the holes in the rear brakes and I'm sure it temporarily got better and then went back to normal. Could be wrong though.

Any ideas? I can't see how they could need replacing as they don't exactly have a hard time of it.

Got an MOT due (actually overdue) and was wondering if this was a fail also.

You don't want to see the price for those brake shoes from Nissan and nobody else will make them I don't think.

Seem to remember hearing they are well over £100 :o

Can't you just cut a section of the top and re-thread it :D ;)

I think when you are adjusting them you need to get back in the car and put the handbrake on and off a few times to help centre them then go out and adjust them again till they are almost touching the inside of the drums. maybe repeat this too.

They shouldnt be worn out unless you try handbrake turns. Mine still work great after adjusting a couple of years ago and mine has galactic mileage on it.

Oh and Nick, autos also still need an handbrake for MOT!

Mike this is very common and in most cases it is due to the hub section of the disc been full of dust.

You will ned to remove the caliper and then the disc and clean it out, bet you will find only about a quarter of the lining actually has been working, after cleaning out the dust rough the shoes and the hub inside up with some course emery papaer so they bed in nice, refit and adjust.

As you said Mike they should have a light use life so where the dust comes from is a bit of a mystery

Nice one boys, plenty of stuff to look at there. Think I'll try Jeff's suggestion first as it's free! Does anyone know if the rear rotor/drum assembly comes off after just removing the pads? Or do you have to remove the caliper to get it off?

Remove caliper and TWaT disc around hub to shock it loose. (make sure hand brake is off first tho. Its not as daft as it sounds). remove disc from hub/studs and your in.

Of course you do bud, but how many times do auto drivers use em? More often than not they fail thru lack of use!!!

Was only makin a mild mannered jibe, no intention to offend!

I do use the handbrake even tho mines an auto - I have another even older (72) 3 litre automatic that gave me a brown trouser moment. It was parked in P and handbrake on but not tight - but the car ended up parked on the ramp of a ferry to Belgium.

Anyway when it got there I stood back watching the ramp drop to the pier and the car just took off itself down the ramp with nobody in it. Thankfully it stopped at the bottom without hitting anyone. Since then I dont ever trust just P or handbrake! On that car the selector was a bit out of adjustment and it had not properly engaged park.

Willie:)
