The auto box in my old thunder has possibly seen its last few days.

 

What I`m wondering is this: If you had the choice, what would you do:

 

1/ Replace with stock auto box

2/ Replace with fast road rebuild auto box

3/ Go for a manual conversion

 

 

I love the marriage of auto with the Z32 engine and am very tempted by feedback on the fast road rebuild. What do you all think?

People who have the fast road box like it.

 

People who go for a manual conversion like it.

I dunno. I like my auto and from what MAcca says the fast road rebuild does do the job.

 

You are right though........is there anyone else here apart from Macca with the fast road rebuild? Any comparisons to manual boxes? I hace to drive a manual every day so changing gears don`t worry me. Its just that with the amount of moolah involved, I want to get the job done right.

Do the job right SE fast road box,after 35k it still snaps through the gears as good as the day it was fitted.

No contest in my opinion - got to be the manual conversion. Just had mine done and it's transformed the car - what a laugh, worked out cheaper than a recon auto box too!!

 

If you can find the bits and ask nicely, Ben Wagg (Warrington) might do the job for your for a fair price - he did mine in two weekends (!!) - feels like a good solid job too.

 

I always kidded myself that I was happy with it being an auto but can honestly say my Z's twice the car it was.

SE's current catalogue quotes £1400 for the fast road rebuild plus £250 for removal/refitting (includes transmission oil refill). You may also need to replace your autobox oil cooler which is about £249 plus £49 fitting.

I was going to go for the fast road rebuild but it would have cost around £1900 all in!

As my engine was out it seemed like and easy job to do the conversion at the same time so I got a manual box and all the conversion bits for about £550.

£1350 is quite a saving if you do it yourself!

Normally though you are looking at £1000 labour at SE or (I think) £750 at Z Centre to fit it all.

Haven't finished the job yet so I can't comment on the chnage but should be done in the next 2 weeks.

I had the SE fast road rebuild on mine and it's a massive improvement on the standard (shagged) box.

 

Then an opportunity presented itself and I did the job properly by converting to manual - love it !

Andy, is your car still slower than it was before the manual conversion?

It's certainly not slower ! Haven't bothered to get to the bottom of the mysterious dyno readout though.

So would you say the manual box has made it noticably quicker?

I know mine wasn't quite a straight swop, however my uprated tubs are only running 7psi base boost (not safety boost), same as my old car was running (same engine, different shell and gearbox), and the new setup gets to about 130mph in the same space that my old car hit about 100mph..

Just had a chat with Luke and after your replies, have decided to take the plunge and go for a manual conversion. Its going in on Saturday........hope I've done the right thing. I was very attached to my auto but I guess that at least with a manual there's less techno wizadry to go wrong and it'll be a damn site cheaper to fix if anything goes wrong in the future.

 

Looks like I'll have to start excercising my left leg huh?

I don't know exactly right now but think around the £1400 mark. Luke said that it was the same price as getting the auto rebuilt and said that was £1400

While I'm here, has anyone got a pic of what the manual gear lever looks like? I have never seen a manual car and wonder what mine will look like minus its auto selection stick
