ok i did a longish motorway run at the week end 140 miles constant 70-80 with a few blasts here n there, then done 60 miles going to work 10 miles either way, and the 40 quid i put in is gone, running on fumes on the way home tonight, with my calculations at 71 p a lire that works out at 16 mpg surely a long run it should do more than 200 miles to 40 quid.

i know mpg threads have been done to death but is this right.

Mmm...seems excesive, on a recent trip (motorway) roughly 250 miles averaged 23mpg half was at erm... high speed and the other half a mix of traffic stop go and 50mph cruising (traffic)

Have a look at the obvious like blocked air filters, poor connections at the temp sensor and / or tps etc etc.

It can vary greatly, mine is completly stock TT auto, best ive had is high twenties, worst 11:(

Mine varies a lot.

Once when going to the Lakes which is mostly motorway driving around 70mph I got 18mpg.

When I went to the WRC in Wales I managed 24mph and that was mostly country driving with lots of slowing down and overtaking and obvioulsy having fun driving. I also had a petrol leak.

thanks for the feedback, i have previously cleaned the throttle bodies, replaced the coolant temp sensor and have k n airfilters, all this made didly squat diference, one thing that bothers me is the tickover, when normal temp its around 1000 rpm i cant find the idle adjust screw anywhere, would the tps give any other symtoms besides high petrol consumption. mines totally stock as i can tell.

wonder if there's a big difference between manwell and auto MPG ?

Srrae you were doing 24mph going down to Wales, blimmey your a slow driver mate. Dont you get tempted to put ur fooooot down.

Yeah I was putting my foot down. You use more petrol slowing down and accelerating then cruising at higher speeds. That is why I was so confused about it. 16-18mpg mostly motor way, and 23-24mpg screwing it round country roads where I was stuck behind slower cars and had to pick cars off a few at a time.

Unlike most I plan to take my car onto the track when it is sorted and when I have the money.

Have to sort this rear wobble first.

Yeah cos it's shit stock ;)

And the Metro did have less MASS as it had to refuel all the time. ;)

The high idle could be a sign of a bad temp sensor connection. It should idle around 7 - 800. I read that you replaced the sensor, did you you clean the connection to the wiring harness?
